I agree with Pa Sniper about that they eat everything. I got a 3 pounder and a 2 pounder as well as 2 decent large mouth bass today while fishing for crappie and bluegills through the ice. The bait they hit was a glow white demon with a red head on a size 12 hook tipped with maggots. All the pickerel were hooked on the tip of their mouth on 4 pound test trilene line.

Oh my gosh yeah, those things are so aggressive it makes them dumb sometimes. When they see the action of a slug-go or Fluke they almost always nail it. The only thing you have to watch for is if they inhale the whole thing, a steel leader might be neccesary.

Aggressive isn't a strong enough word for what pickerel are! I've had a pickerel hit a lure that was just barely touching the water while I was rowing the boat! He had to swim around the oar in the water to get to the lure! I once caught a 24 inch pickerel that had a 12 inch pickerel in it's mouth! The tail of the 12 inch was sticking out of the bigger pickerel's mouth by about 3 inches and it STILL hit my lure!!!!!!! I pulled the other pickerel out of the big ones mouth and the head was all digested! Nasty angry aggressive fish! They will hit anything that moves on the water! My buddy caught one on a lure shaped like a little Coors Light can Popper! We would have fishing contest to see who could catch more Pickerel. One time I was reeling one in. Just as I got it to the boat it got off the hook! It didn't swim away. We could see it there right where it got off. My buddy slapped his lure into the water and the pickerel hit it! Another point for him! Doh! I love fishing for those bad boys!

best bait i have found is a solid red spinner bait-head, skirt, blade all bright red. the jack fish love it! anyone know how to filet them to keep away from all the little bones? had a chart once from mepp's that showed 7 filet strips to get boneless meat, but lost it in a move--i think the wife th rew it away with some of my other "junk"[:@]
