I've had a similar situation happen, however I know what I had on. While fishing a shoreline, we noticed a few extraordinarily large carp (20lb +) tailing close to the bank. For some odd reason I had the feeling that i was going to be able to get one of them to bit a small crankbait. Throw it out beside them, and BANG! The biggest one takes it with full force. This huge sucker was peeling line off my reel like nothing! He turned and headed toward the boat. I reeled as fast as I could to keep tension on the line. Finally he went straight under the boat and kept on going, peeling drag just the same. he never did Turn again, and the hook pulled out of his mouth. Stronger line and a bit heaver of a reel, i have no doubt that he would have pulled the boat.

That reminds me of that one part of Jaws the movie.

It would have had to have been a laker. Not much else you mentioned could have taken the line like that.

Just out of curiousity, are you anywhere near Watertown?

I have to agree with the foul hook idea. I have foul hooked carp on a spinner bait while fishing shallows and thoughy that I would never get them to the boat. You get one sideways, especially while trolling and you can't stop them. Even a smaller fish feels pretty big, and one as big as you hooked feels like a run away keg of beer. I too have had them straighten out some pretty stout hooks. Keep fishing!!!

hey Charlie how the heck ya been? I was on Owasco Lake. It wasn't one of those Otisco muskies

Nope. Owasco Lake (Auburn area)

The foul hook thing makes sense. Never thought of that. That would cause a heck of a lot more resistance. Whatever it was and however it was hooked, it was bizzare.
