Fly Fishing vs Spinning Gear
Was wondering, what do u guys prefer and what do u seem to have the best luck with? Fly Rod or Spinning Gear? I know that i've been out fished by flys rods a couple of times. if u had to choose one, what would u choose?
As i am gettin older i'm getting more and more into the trditional way of doing things. Took up bow hunting last year, and this year i'm planning on mastering the fly rod.
I have some experience with flyfishing. I've caught a few fish but never used fly rods to the extent that i have spinning gear.
I'm lookin forward to small mouth fishing on creeks and some large mouth in ponds with the flyrods this year. just wondering what u guys thought worked best or preferred.

RE: Fly Fishing vs Spinning Gear
guess it really depends on what I am fishing. Now that I have moved to Alaska fly fishing rules. Back in Mn you would be hard pressed to pull walleyes up from the deep with a fly rod although I am sure it could be done!
Yup here there are salmon galore, trout, grayling, char, pike, sheefish..heck I bet I am leaving some out....all of them are great fly fishing opportunities..heck even lakers in the spring and fall when the come up in the shallows!
I have to admit though that after days if not weeks of fishing (back when I was a little crazier living in the barracks hammering kings as much as I could) casting all that weight just to get down deep enough really left something to be desired so out came the bait caster! I do love flyfishing though...I think I like fly tying even better!

I enjoy both about the same. I LOVE wading out in the trout stream, throwing on a terrestrial ant and cast it out by and undercut log. BUT, I LOVE taking my ultra light spinning gear out after 5 pound small mouths.
Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet
P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

Almost all of my time is spent Fly Fishing for trout. To me that's my style of fishing. If I decided to fish for bass or any fish other than trout or salmon, I would consider using a spinning rod with whatever bait/lure that I thought would work best. Catching a largemouth on a rubber worm is one thing, catching a largemouth on a streamer is something entirely different.

NOT SURE WHY FLY FISHING IS CONSIDERED TRADITIONAL. NETS, SPEARS AND TNT IS TRADITIONAL IN MY BOOK. I GREW UP IN NEWFOUNDLAND FLY FISHING FOR ATLANTIC SALMON BUT ALSO USED BAIT CASTING AND SPINNING GEAR FOR SALT WATER FISHING. HAVE NOT USED FLY FISHING GEAR FOR YEARS. MOSTLY USE HEAVY HALIBUT GEAR NOW IN ALASKA. FLY FISHING JUST SEEMS TO BE A YUPPIE THING. BUT I'M NOT INTO CATCH AND RELEASE, WHEN I FISH IT IS FOR THE FREEZER NOT TO RELAX OR BE ONE WITH NATURE GETTING THERE IN AN OVER PRICED SUV AND DRINKING LATTE OR OVER PRICED BOTTLED WATER.
WHEN FISHING RED SALMON I CAN CATCH MORE WITH A FLY ROD BUT THE WAY IT'S DONE IN ALASKA IS WITH A WEIGHT TO GET THE FLY DOWN QUICKLY IN FAST WATER BUT THAT IS "COMBAT FISHING" AND NOT FOR PLEASURE EITHER.

Like you i got into bow huntign lats year and i think it is just as fun as gun hunting. When i fish i usuallly use spinning gear because it is imposible to fish like i do in a creek that is full of snags and every possible obstacle. I fish in a stream by my house that has about a 5 foot concrete wall along it and when u hook into a huge carp wit 6 or 4 pound line u cant just pull it up u have have to fight it all the wy down to the ledge that goes into the creek. While going donw you have to around trees and stick your rod trees and all kind of stuff so fly fishing is not a possibility. Because it is surronded by trees and deep and fast. But my dad fly fishes for trout at a trout stream we go to a few times a year but I usually use spining gear there but i wont to get into fly fishing.

I made the switch from spin tackle to Fly-Fishing last year around this time. I have since given all my spin gear away and have devoted my life to the sport of flyfishing. Ok that sounds silly, I know, I just love the sport and have since learned allot. I can honestly say I catch more fish now than when I was chuckin gobs of worms. The number one reason for that is, I fish more than ever and enjoy it WAY more. There's allot more involved and you have to learn, work and practice more. You never master the sport and I think that alone is SWeeEEEtTTT! nof said!
P.S. Nothing against you worm chuckers, just using the term loosely is all.
