I' ve got one of these for my kayak and can' t complain. Its perfect for what you need as the transducer can be attached to a line and floats on to of your hole or can also be used in the summer. Just attach to a spare rod and cast out. or tie and drag from your boat. A bargain at only 170$ they do sell a smaller version (less pixcels ) for 80$ good luck.

Do they work in moving water/white water?

I doubt it as the air bubbles will affect the transducer. It needs to be in the water. When I use mine in my kayak, if I go to fast it will plane out of the water and not pick up the signal. If your thinking about putting one in a yak you can epoxy the transducer of a regular fish-finder in the bottom. The smart cast is ment to be cast from a fishing rod,but all you need is some inginuity.
