The Remington Amunition Balistics web page shows that Remington has 10 factory 30-06 loads that deliver greater than 1,000 foot pounds of energy at 500 Yds and with the Premier 180Grn Scirocco Bonded at the top of that list with 1,400 ft Lbs.
Sure, this is Remington published data, but hand loaders could probably do a bit better. For example, my ballistic software shows that the 180Grn Scirocco @ 2700FPS would still be delivering 1,000 Ft Lbs of energy at 600 Yds.
All this just to highlight the point already made, several times, that the 30-06 is capable of taking deer size game at distances that far exceed the average shooters ability to place the shot in the right place at those distances.
