RE: Ruger 204
I have a Savage .204 and love it. I use it for Coyotes and blowing rabbits to peices. I did alot of research on buying a varmit rifle before buying the .204. The reason that I chose the .204 over the 22-250 was that the .204 is faster 4250 fps and does just as much damage. But the main reason was barrel wear. The .204 tests have proven that you can shoot it all day long and not have to worry about barrel wear. The 22-250 is known for having a short barrel life and losing its accuracy. As for ammo prices the .204 prices for ammo are slowly going down. I can pick up a box of hornady vmax 20 count for $12.99 a box. The 22-250 is the same price or maybee a dollar cheaper. Remington and Winchester are starting production within the next few months and I expect prices to drop even farther. Just my 2 cents.

I have a Savage model 12 Varmint in the .204 and love it, I have both a .243 and 22-250 in a Rem. model 700 bull barrel and the Savage .204 is still my choice to shoot, and it will out shoot both remingtons, but that maybe the Savage rifle itself and not a credit to the .204 caliber.

RE: Ruger 204
i just bought a savage .204 model 12 varmit !! yes, it does have a limited range (200-300 yds) of good accuracy and knockdown power. where i live, there's 6" of soil and stone under that with houses all around my 10 acres. if i shoot a yote at 200 yds with a large caliber, even a hollowpoint, there is an increased chance of ricochet. the .204 is supposed to fragment on impact with no exit wound !!

I have built six of these so far - all for coyote hunters, and have gotten a mixed review of its performance. Sometimes the coyote (or Bobcat) falls over dead and sometimes they run off. The problem seems to be more bullet related than anything inherent to the caliber - current bullets (V-Max and Blitzking) seem to open up a little too quickly for larger varmints. Hoping the new Ballistic Tip, due to be available soon, will be a little heavier constructed.

RE: Ruger 204
I was just wondering on the accuracy of the 204 vs the 243. I have a 243 Model 70 varmint rifle and I love it for accuracy and range and I was just seeing if the 204 has anything worth paying for over the 243?

So far accuracy with this caliber has been OK - but not as good overall as the .20 Tactical. If you reload, go with the .20 Tactical. Cheaper to shoot and about the same performance. If you just shoot factory stuff the .204 is your choice.
The .204 and the .243 are very different calibers - .204 has negligible recoil and muzzle blast and won't usually even exit larger varmints. Also is a lot more wind sensitive.

Actually the 204 doesnt do that bad with wind. The bullet travels so fast the wind barely has any time to push it around depending on how far your shooting. And reloading is good too, you dont just need to shoot factory loads. They have alot of supplies for reloading this cartridge.
