RE: 7600 Remington
ORIGINAL: Paul L Mohr
I had one in 30-06, pretty gun and shot ok, but it had the harshest recoil of any gun I have owned, even other 30-06's.

RE: 7600 Remington
I have a 7600 carbine in 30-06. I wanted a quick shooting gun for hunting the thick large tracts of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. I didn't want a scope and put on a Williams peep. The raised comb didn't allow for a good sight picture so I contacted Remington and they sent me a straight shotgun stock that matched my rifle's finish perfectly. The gun now closely resembles the older model 760 which came with open sights and a straight stock. I took out the screw in aperture on the peep, painted the ring of the peep red and installed a red firedot front bead. There is often snow when I use this rifle and red ring with a red dot in the middle of brown running on snow is quite a picture and allows pretty quick and accurate shooting. The eye centers the large ring on the peep and I can shoot the rifle very well up to 100 yds or even a little further which is plenty long enough when you are hunting the deep woods away from fields.

RE: 7600 Remington
I actually got the idea from Larry Benoit 25 years ago when I was invited into his house for a cup and some talk. When the 760's became 7600 with the raised comb the Benoits used a rasp andshaved the comb down then refinished the stock. I just couldn't bring myself to do that to a brand new gun when I bought it in themid 90's so I contacted Remington and they made the suggestion to replace the stock with one from their 20 ga shotgun. I think it cost me 65 bucks for the stock and I cut it down slightly and put a rubber recoil pad on it. I think Larry and his sons all use scopes now since they are older.

Both you and CI are fortunate to know them . I wish I could spend some time talking to Larry and Lanny that would be priceless.

Ill second the harsh recoil. The 760 I have in 300 Savage will smack you pretty hard even though they tell me the 300 is a mild recoiler. Helluva gun and a helluva caliber for the logging properties I hunt.
