Remington 798 or Sako
I am thinking about getting a 338 WM or 300 WM for elk hunting and want to know what rifle would be your choice for a "carry gun". I have not read or heard anything about the Rem mdl 798. Is it junk or just hasn't caught on yet?I know the Sakohas a good reputation but can be on the heavy side. I looked at Kimber but didn't know if the 7lb rifle in a 338 or 300 would be a little muchfor recoil. I know the stock design may help alot. Any help or opinions are appreciated.

Personally I would choose a heavier rifle for shooting those caliber's to cut down on recoil. There is quite a difference in price between those two rifles and from what I can see they don’t offer the 338 Win. Mag in the 798 model... http://www.remington.com/products/fi..._798_specs.asp

I would have to go Sako if they were my choices. I would also look at Brownings, Weatherbys, and Kimbers. I really like the Weatherby and am looking into getting one in 30-378 Mag or im going to get a Browning in 7mm Ultra Mag. I have a Sako but it is not a hunting rifle. It is a TRG-42 in 338 Laupua Mag. It is very accurate. I would expect there other rifles to be the same. But i have to recomend that you take a look at some other rifle manufacturers.

The sako has a proven track record vs the remington that's still new.
a bit on heavy side is better when shooting magnums unless you like recoil. I would choose the sako in a heartbeat between the 2.

Between these 2 rifles I'd choose the Sako. Outstanding builtrifle andaccurate. It is a bit heavy as you say.
For a 6 3/4 lb rifle made with the same barrel as the Sako, very fine built rifle, made in the same factory as Sako take a look at one of the Tikka T3 rifles. It does make a difference with a lighter rifle hiking up and down mountains. It'sa very accurate out of the box rifle.

I'm a sako fan even if they cost more sheckels. I just could not recommend a light rifle in 338 Win Mag unless you have fired that sort of thing before in a light piece and don't mind getting stomped. Late fall each year I see some rip snortin' heavy caliber used sakos on sale back after 1 outing.
Could it be the recoil?

comparing the 798 to the sako is like comparing a geo metroto an escalade one is economy and one is fancy imo.

I just picked up a used Sako 75 FinnLite .270 WSM and I have a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14-44mm mounted on top, this is one of the most accurate guns I have ever shot,a 5 shot group that you can cover with a quarter @ 100 yards! I have always loved Remington, but this is in a different class...
