Default I'm sure this'll make some of you cringe.

I started hunting again this year. Been several years and I had sold my hunting rifles and hunting shotgun. I bow hunted and took a nice doe. Tomorrow I am going out in the woods and since it's general firearms season, I'm taking the only thing I have that is legal. A mossburg 590 Military style shotgun. I have patterned this with Rottweil slugs out to 100 yards on a human silouette target, and feel like it would give me reasonable accruacy in the thick stuff I will be hunting tomorrow. I don't think Buckshot would be a good idea, as the 20 inch cyliner bore barrel would probable not deliver a good hit past 30 yards(just a guess). Ok, let me have it. I know I should spring for a new rifle, Maybe a 30-30, but with Christmas right around the corner, I just can't swing it. I'm gonna stop by the hardware store today and pick up a dowl to put inside the spring to limit it to 3 shot capacity. I'm steeling myself for the chastising I will probably take for "redneckin" it this way.

A 12ga with a good slug is one of the best guns you can use in the thick stuff. A lot of states like Virginia, where I used to live, are shotgun only except in certain counties. I'll tell you one thing a 12ga slug makes one hell of a hole. The first gun I got was a 12ga because it is one hell of a versitile gun, from quail to big bucks you can't beat them for short range.

That's a great gun you've got there. It's rare that you find any smoothbore that will shoot good out to 100 yards. You should have a great time with it. I would choose that gun over a 30-30 anyday. And you are using perfect ammo for the job. You could go after grizzly's with that setup if you wanted to.

Use the slugs. They will do a job.

This is my first year out and I bought a Mossberg 500. I havent shot anything yet....(made some newbie mistakes this year), but I really like the gun. I took it to the range and could not beleive the size of the hole a slug puts in the target! Man that thing will probably drop a deer in its tracks! At any rate, I hope my luck/skill improves.
