What shotgun would you buy, never owned one before.
Hey all,
Just got a .22 last week, and I've been having a blast!! Thank you to everyone that gave me feedback on that purchase. I've heard that a shotgun is the next thing to get, so I'm wondering if you guys could recommend a couple. I'm looking for a solid firearm, nothing too fancy, or too cheap.
Thank you in advance for your recommendations!

I second the 870 express... Ive had the gun for about 6 years now and ive dropped it in marsh dozens of times ive shot plenty of duck it was actually voted the best pump for thay price range. It is a very solid gun and will treat u right.
If your looking for an auto i was sugest the remington 1187, i also have this gun and once again remington impressed me. It is also a very good gun.

get a mossberg pump either a 500 or a 535 or even a 835. mossbergs pumps dont get any simpler asfar taking them down for cleaning.

I would have to say 870 express as well. You were not specific in what you may want to use a shotgun for? If you would like the option of using for skeet, bird and deer, look into the 870 express combo with the bird barrel and slug barrel. I am only guessing, but I bet you could get this combo new for around $400.

What do you want to do with your new gun?
+1 on the 870 express if you want a shotgun. I would get a 12ga for versitility, but you may want a 20ga for the reduced recoil. Not sure exactly what you want.

Any of these mentioned will do for now. If your like any of us here, you'll start with something reliable and simple (affordable as well) and then as you get older and have more money, you'll get a nicer shotgun. I started with a winchester model 120 20 guage and have been through several shotguns since. I now have a bennelli M2 and am completly satisfied with it. But a rule of thumb, dont get rid of the guns that treat you well! EJ

If you're just starting out and you're not used to recoil I would buy a 20 ga. You need to decide what you want to do with the gun. If you want to shoot skeet a semi auto or over under double barrel will be easier. A pump will work just fine but it's a little harder. Trap shooting you can use anything, single shot whatever. I would recommend a remington 1100 or a Remington 870 Wingmaster with removable choke tubes. The 870 express is just as good but I really love the way the Wingmaster feels. The first shotgun I bought my son was a youth model 1100 20 ga, it shoots 2 3/4 and 3 in shells. It's a great gun, it has never jammed. You can even buy a rifled slug barrel to hunt deer. The 20 ga is smaller than the 12 but the velocity of the slugs is higher and it shoots flatter. I really haven't had good luck with Mossberg shotguns. I had a model 500 that I hated. It never cycled shells like the Remington, always difficult to pump and just felt cheap. I also have a model 5500 that will not cycle one shell without a jam. I've had it to the gunsmith and it still doesn't work. I would stick with Remington, Winchester, Browning for reasonably priced reliable guns. There are a lot of other great companies out there, those are just the cheaper ones that I trust. Hope this helps.
