I'll vote for a Yildiz over/under in 12 ga. They are very sweet handling and come with several chokes.
They are imported by Academy Sports and run just under $400. I used to shoot a Mossberg pump shotgun and there is a HUGE difference in weight and feel.
I use it primarily for small birds (dove & quail) and it really makes a big difference in being able to get the gun up and steady quickly.

870 wingmaster if you are right handed, Browning BPS if you are left handed (I also would reccomend for righties too)- either will give you a lifetime and probably your kids' lifetimes of trouble-free service.

also, as far as accessories (if you're into all that) it seems that the 870 is hard to beat.
