nice gun!!! not trying to be a dick but whats the thrill in taking a deer @ 3000 feet???? seems like it would be kind of like going tothe movies...and the theater only has little 2 inch movie screen and no sound and you gotta sit in the back row....i dont get it
It would take much more "skill" to take a deer at 3000ft than it would to take a deer at 100yards. I never done it, but imagine the thrill is pocessing the skill to do such a thing.

kind of like the skill it would take to stalk a deer to within 20 yards...wait for the right time to raise your bow without being detected...and make a good shot while your heart is pounding through your chest and you have a hard-on the size of the Sears Tower.....

i dont think it compares to that.... if you can make the shot once, you can make it again...imo.....once again i like the gun...would like to give something like that a try on the range someday....

I have built quite a few 6MM-284's and personally own one set up to shoot the 105 A-Max. I used a Remington "blueprinted" action, H-S Precision stock, Jewell trigger, and a Jeff Lawrence 1:9 barrel. Mine is a little more portable at 12.75 lbs., and shoots 1/4" groups with regularityif I do my part.

About this 1,000 yard business . . . . Although the ballistic coefficient of this bullet is about .500 and they are going around 3400 at the muzzle, the retained velocity at 1,000 yards is only 1675 and the energy is down to 650 ft. lbs. I have seen this load put several elk on the ground so fast, from a broadside lung shot, that one would swear it was a head shot. But at distances in the 250 to 450 yard range. For humane 1,000 yard deer hunting (if there is such a thing), I'm thinking a 7 STW with the 168 Berger VLD would be the ticket.

how about a laser guided missile fired from Mt. Everest....that would get it done too...you could watch it on video screen from the comfort of your favorite leather lazy boy while drink'n a chilly one.

I have used the 7mm STW as well as a 30-378 to take deer out to and beyond 1,000 yards but I'm one that just prefers the 6mm-284 cartridge...

It took several years of shooting thousands of rounds of ammo at targets at long range before I ever put the cross hairs on a deer! I am both a Military and Police trained sniper and much prefer shooting "targets" at 1,000 yards instead of 100 yards....

With your 105 A-Max at 1000 yards what are your come ups? What amount of windage do you have with a 10 mph 45 degree wind @ 1000 yards? Just curious to know the particulars.

When sighted in at 100 yards, this load in my rifle would be about 215 inches low at 1,000 yards. And the 10 MPH wind drift would be 67 inches. This is at sea level. At 7,000 feet in elevation, the 1K yard drop is "only" 185 inches.

I'm in complete agreement that a rig like this can produce some amazing groups at long range. A guy in North Carolina set a world record with a heavyweight 6MM-284 a few years back using the 107 Sierra bullet. Just under three inches for ten shots, if I remember. I'm only questioning the amount of "pop" a bullet of this weight still has at this distance - particularly when its impact velocity is below 2,000 fps.

Interesting figures Roskoe. You using ballistics software? Maybe I should get same.

OK, I am having a hard time comprehending shooting a deer at 1000 yards. I would think that knowing the exact range would be an absolute must.

So, can someone write a typical hunting scenerio for shooting a deer at 1000 yards? Do you spot a deer at 600 yards and then move back to the next ridge or what? Do you have to have NO wind, or can you make that much compensation? What kind of rest do you shoot off of? Do you have some kind of portable bench on a cart?

Again, I just can't imagine what this type of hunting would actually look like.

Thanks

I got the sea level figures from Exbal. The 7,000 foot elevation drop figure is from actual shooting at that distance - although it varies a little with temps and barometric pressure.
