Over a year ago I saw this gun at Wal-Mart and fell in love with it already. Finally last week I got it and can't wait to go out and shoot some deer with it. What would be a good scope on it? Or should I go open scopes? I got some open scope mounts so I guess that will work. Any suggestions on scopes? Also is 150 grain good for deer or should I go to 170 grain?

If you wanted to scope it, the best thing is to get a low style weaver base and a small 1.5-4 x 32 Bushnell scope for it. The raised up scope rings are okay, but can be a little awkward to get used to.

I had a fixed 4x32 scope on mine, but it broke, so I took it off and just got used to using the open iron sights on it.

You have to figure out which type of ammo your 30-30 likes. You only have a short time to do it before opening day too! [&:] Winchester, Remington, Federal, and the new Hornady LeverEvolution, etc... the possibilities are endless.

You are the only one that can decide whether to shoot open sights, scope or combo with raised rings. I had the Williams peep/firesight set on my 336 for a while and was very accurate shooting out to 100 yards. A 1.5-4.5 or even a 2x7 power scope will work very well as well. You can use 150grn or 170grn bullets, as either will do the job on a whitetail. Shoot some of both and see which you prefer.
Have fun and good luck.

I usually just use the 150gr in my 30-30. A little easier on me and a bit more flat shooting at a distance. A whitetail shouldnt be able to tell the difference if the shot is placed well.

I don't want to start any kind of argument on loads for your gun, but try a box of winchester or federal 125 grn hollow points on whitetails and hogs.

I handload the 125 hp's and will never go back 150 or 170's in it. I don't use a scope on mine because I mostly hunt river swamp land and the shots' are normally extremely close, but I have a couple of areas where 150 yd shots are possible. The 125 has made a believer out of me.

I've also taken 300 plus lb hogs as close as 10 yds and out to probably 50 yds, never had one run. I once saw a boar hog coming towards me, he probably weighed 250 lbs maybe more, I never weighed him. Anyway, I got down on one knee and when he walked around a tree within 10 yds I shot him between the eyes and he droped like a rock, both eyes poped out.

I could keep going, but just wanted to recommend the 125 hp's to you and anyone that has never tried them.

No arguments here. The only reason that I was shooting a 150 (or 170 before I I had shoulder surgeries) is because that is all that I find at the places that I have bought my shells from. Now that I am reloading my own shells I will try to find some of those 125's that you speak of. Thanks for the advice man.

I got a 336W this morning, trading off a pistol for it. I added my old 1.5-4x32mm Bushnell Trophy, and look forward to sighting in tomorrow, and hunting Friday....

Nice gun. I just picked up an 1894 .44 Magum nearly identical to that one. You wont be dissapointed, they are very fine handling guns and unless you are planning on taking 300 yard shots at deer or elk hunting with it the 30/30 cartridge is plenty.

UPDATE: range is closed today (Thanksgiving) so couldn't do the sight-in I'd hoped to. So... I bore-sighted the rifle, and then went out back of the house. It is about to be developed, and there are ever-more houses... can't really shoot back there anymore, but I can shoot a little there, before someone gets upset. I did a five-shot rough sight in. My impression is... this is one mild-shootin' cartridge. Very little recoil, compared to a muzzleloader or slug gun, or .270 or 30-06. In fact... I'm wondering if how well it'll work on the deer. I know it's supposed to be good... but it doesn't make near the impression on me shooting it, as it does shooting my muzzleloader. I should have started with one of these 20 years ago, instead of that 30-06.

So, those of you using the 30-30... has it got enough ooomph to put down the deer? Sure shoots mild...

Hey Cactus,
Last year one of the 3 deer I shot was with my Marlin 336. I hand load a Win 150RN that shoots under 1.5" at 100 yards with 2500fps MV. The deer I shot was a medium sized buck (130lbs) and it dropped in it's tracks. The shot was right at 150 yards. The trajectorey of that load using see through mounts and a 1" high at 100 sight in puts me dead on at 145 and down less than 4" at 200 with energy of over 1000fp at 200. I would have to say that yes the 30-30 will get the job done to at least that range as long as I do my part.

Good luck with yours.
