7mm-08 or 7mm Short Action Ultra Mag
Argh! I was all set on the Remington Model 7 in 7mm Ultra Mag (SAUM) and then i started getting feedback that the Ultra Mag is going to be obsolete and not togo with it. What should I do? Get the 7mm-08 orgofor asomething like a 30-06 which will give slightly different performance than the SAUM which will kick as much? I'm so confused and don't want t0 make a mistake as this is the only rifle I can get (that's a totallydifferent headache)-- this will be used primarily for deer in PA and Maine, but I want the versatility to use it on larger game.

I really don't like the .30-06 in the mod.7, in the 700 yes.
How big of game are you planning to hunt? Moose?
I have taken moose with 6.5mm Swede 156gr Norma.
How many times are you going to hunt moose? Are you going
to hunt deer 95% of the time? If yes, go with the 7mm-08.
The 7mm SAUM is more powerful and alittle more recoil than the
7mm-08.

Thanks- I'll be hunting deer 99% of the time. I just want to know that i have the firepower/option to hunt larger game such as elk and moose if/when the opportunity arises. From an financial standpoint, I think that I'll be going with the Model 7 as opposed to the 700, so it looks like the 7mm-08. Thanks again

You will not be disappointed with the 7mm-08. I have one (it's a Browning A-Bolt), and it is by far my favorite rifle. I like it better than my 30-06. It's such a great deer cartridge, and with the right loads and a good shot, it will do the trick for bigger game too. My vote is for the 7mm-08. I had a 300 ultra mag and a 300 short action ultra mag...sold them both after about 6 months, and I am glad I did.

If I could only have one rifle, and I was going to primarily hunt deer but still wanted the capability to hunt moose I would buy a Tikka T3 in either .270 or 30-06. Nice and light, better than a remington and cheaper also.

If you want a good cartridge that can be used for a number of game then the 7mm Rem. Mag will do the trick, but if all you’re hunting mainly deer with the occasional larger game then the 7mm-08 will do, with a shorter action and less recoil. Good luck.

as others have said....the 7-08 is a fine cartridge for all north american game. You're not undergunned with this cartridge.
I wouldn't hesitate to take it to africa on a plains game hunt for 1,500 pound antelope like eland, kudu, wildebeest, zebra, gemsbok or the like.
