Default Help me pick- Parker 165#?

Hello new here,

I've not ever even shot a crossbow, but to get my Dad to elk hunt with me in archery season I thought of buying him a crossbow. I know nothing about them. Looking into the crossbow's I noticed that the parker cyclone 165 is only 6.5 pds. My dad is 62 yrs old, so I don't want to get him a 10 pd crossbow that he has to pack around at 9000 ft all day. Are these good, well made crossbows? I also wanted to know what the effictive range of a bow shooting 350fps is, if practiced with alot.

That is a typo...the Cyclone and the Hurricane are both 175lbs but comparitively it is fairly light. I have sold a ton of them and except for a few issues when they first came out that Parker corrected have had great luck with them. Cocking them is a pain though as there is practicaly no let off and they have a very high string angle but they do have a crank for it. It is still a bow...even at that speed keep the shots short. I would take a 45yrd shot with it with confidence, but closer is better...

I shoot one at 68 and two bad shoulders. It is relatively light for a crossbow but that weight is without scope. The scope that comes with the bow is marginal and cannot be set forward far enough for good eye relief. (although Wyvern Creations markets a mount that remedies that). Add a scope, sling and quiver and it weighs closer to 8.
It's a good powerful, reliable bow made by a company that stands behind their product. It gets an honest 355 fps with the supplied arrows that weigh 425 grains. The best part: it's costs about half of what other quality bows in that speed range cost.
Their Hurricane does not have an adjustable stock and cost $50 less. Same bow, without the needless gimmick.

OH...FYI, Parker is using Hawk scopes on their bows now and they have enough eye relief to work on the Cyclone just fine....they are also much better than the Truglo's that were on them before. Though if you want to use a Lumizone on that bow my adapter works slick

My dad got his Parker Terminator from David (Wyvern). A great guy to do business with and the pricing is good as well.

FWIW what I did is make a trip with my dad to the nearest Cabelas so he could get an opportunity to shoot some other Xbows and decide what he wanted. He didn't care for the Excaliber Phoenix, or my Exocet but he really felt comfortable with the Parker.

I finally went out and found a couple of parker cyclones (175). I picked up one at cabelas and I thought there is no way this thing weights 6.5 pds, or even 8 pds. So he put iton the scale and it weighed 11.75 pds. I found another one (175#) at a local sporting goods store and the weight for it was 10.5 pds ? So I guess my question is that parker is advertising there 165# cyclone weighing 6.5 pds, which I know you said it was a typo, but everybody's catalogue says 165#, Including Parkers web site. Does this "new cyclone weigh an honest 6.5 pds with no accessories on it ?

Get the 165lb out of your head...they screwed up when they first printed the catalog and it got re-printed a bunch of times before they caught it. There is no 165lb model. That being said, you need to look at a few things as far as advertized crossbow weights go...theyALL list the weights with NOTHING on them(including that big forestock).Ipersonaly think the Cyclone weight is a typo as well, but it is still about average for most compound crossbows. In this instance that large forestock is not on the bow along with a scope and quiver. That big forestock can be replaced with a lightweight pistol grip since the bottom rail is a picitinni rail and will take a number of accessories, but if weight is the big concern, look at Excal. They make the lightest weight bow out there that is worth owning, but you will have to deal with the width.
