Feet per second (effective range)

RE: Feet per second (effective range)
I think I am around the 310 mark and am pretty happy with that. Some of the newer CB's are spitting them out faster, but they are also not holding up either. Right now it seems like the reliable speed for the CB industry is 320 to 350. Most all makers that have CB's in that speed are having good results. The punishment that a faster CB is putting on the equipment has not been perfected yet and people are having problems. A few new ones have came out this year, maybe we will see a improvement.

I'm getting 318 to 320 with the Vortex and 24 strand Flemish string using 404 gr arrows. And around 312 to 315 from my Trminator with string made with D75 Thin using 428 gr arrows..

RE: Feet per second (effective range)
I actually don't know how fast (or slow) my crossbow shoots. I would guess about 230-250 based on what the specs. were from the manufacturer. I may take it to a shop and chrono. it sometime, but it really doesn't matter because I shoot it enough to know how much it drops and the arrow weight means a lot more to penetration than does speed. You have "(effective range)" in your title. Are you trying to figure out how far you can shoot at an animal with a crossbow? Just figure about the same power (speed for any given weight arrow/bolt) as a compound bow atless than 1/2the weight. For example: 150# crossbow= 60# modern compound bow. Of course this will vary with different crossbows and compounds but it's a good rule of thumb. 30-40 yds are what most seasoned archers will keep their shots under. Hope this is what you're after.

My Horton Hunter advertises UP TO 320 fps. But I would really like to to take it to a bow shop with a chrono. and see exactly what it shoots. It hits pretttttttty hard!
