it seems as though there isnt any brass inserts for the beman thunderbolts, at least that I can find anyway, and from what I gather brass gold tips are slightly bigger and wont fit the thunderbolts, which I guess is better than too small because, if need be, I could justshave them down to make them work, which would be a fair ammount of messing around considering I'd have to cut them down to get the desired weight too
I also dont have any brass inserts on hand... but Idid a little alumin. insert refabing and came up with a good and fairly easyway of increasing my inserts weight without going into a big ordeal, I also found a decent way to rework inserts for my nocks(which are inserts too)and make them work, which put my arrows right in the area of weight and FOC that I was looking for...
so, with beman thunderbolts, my new nocks, feathers, my new inserts, and 125gr heads I came out at 434gr OA witha FOCof 18%,IMO thats not bad for beman thunderbolts, they're actually about 4gr's lighter nowthan they were but have alot moreFOC...so I'm happy now
at least I hope so... I have yet to shoot them and I'm not going out in this winter snow storm we're having(again...)to do it, but I dont expect any problems...
then the broadhead testing begins...
I was going to wait until thissummer to start messing with this stuff but the way things are going it looks like I'll have it all sorted out by spring

LOL
yep, I sure did...
to tell you the truth I'd probably have went with DM's arrows a couple days ago, and it would still be the easiest way,but I had the thunderbolts and everything else I needed to do a little experimenting so Ifigured what the hell...
I'm actually pretty happy with how they turned out, I just hope theyshoot good

now, get workin on brass inserts for aluminum arrows in 2216/2219 .
now, get workin on brass inserts for aluminum arrows in 2216/2219 .
I've thought of doing that actually butthe machines I have access to are all hand operated, nothing automated, so every little step involved in making an insert would require doing it by hand, and theres a surprisingly high number of steps involved in making just one insert, not to mention 12...
so as nice as it would be to have some around it just wouldnt be cost or timeeffective from my standpoint to make them in any high numbers

RE: well, I think I finally worked out a good arrow setup
well, I've had the last couple weeks off and its been cold so I've had the chance to mess with my stuff alot, besides putting together the arrows above I also put together a few test 2213's
I shoot 85gr thunderheads out of my vertical bow and really like them, however I really DONT like the 125gr thunderheads I bought for my crossbow... I gavethree of the 85gr thunderheads to my son and kept three for myself in case I get the urge to hunt with my vertical bow, but I got the brainstorm ofrigging up some more inserts to be used with the 85gr thunderheads and my crossbow, and they came out very well
this is what I came up with... 2213's, 85gr tip, weighted insert, cut down insert for nock(13gr), and feathers came to 435gr OA with a FOC of 17.3% with the thunderheads(according to that FOC calculator... ), stat-wise they turned out to be an almost exact copy of theabove carbon arrows...
unfortunately I still havent gotten to shoot either set and I'm pretty excited to do so, but I'm not wading out in the snow with my crosbow and target to do it, I think I may have to go to the local range this weekend...

RE: well, I think I finally worked out a good arrow setup
I've been experimenting with arrows also I made some 100gr brass inserts to fit XX75 2219arrows. I used 100gr target tips, 4"vanes and alum flat nocks With the tip they weigh 570grs. Very heavy arrow!I shot them at 15 ydswith my Profusion. The penetration in the target was incrediable, I also made some 100gr inserts to fit some Easton carbon arrows, The Eastons weighed in at 392 with the insert. I also weighed some Goldtips and they weigh in at 304 with their brass insert. I found no difference in accuracy when shooting the three different arrows. As Awshucks said, DO NOT shot a second arrow at the same spot without removing the first arrow unless you like to ruin arrows. All three arrows will group within a quarter for me . The XX75's hit about 1&1/2 lower than the Easton Carbons. The Goldtips hit about 3/4" higher than the Eastons. As soon as the weather operates I will try them all at 30 and 40yds Can't do it now as there is far too much snow,

i think he told me he makes hunting points that heavy too,not sure.they sell them in like 6 or 7 weights in a kit or seperate.you could go that route and at least see what weight on point shoots best out of your bow.they are not expensive for kit.
question is, will making the point area more heavy make the arrow more accurate say out to 40 yds max if you are hunting ?
matthias fella thinks so.
as for pentration of arrow, if your arrow using say a 100 gr spitfire mechinical on deer goes right thru deer with arrow that weights 400 grs, why would making arrow heavier be of any useunless the heavier arrow shoots better and gets tighter groups?
i feel a light arrow is ruining many of the compound crossbow limbs,i have no info on that other than ALL the limbs i see being sent back to horton for replacement.
so, just for that reason i want to increase my arrow weight up and only way is to buy matthias tungsten inserts from italy which bring point up to 570 grs with hunting pointor if someone comes up with a brass insert for xx75/78 arrows.
i dont like that weight behind the insert that is available,i think not knowing a lot ,just reading etc that you want as much weight on thepoint or at least RIGHT at the insert not behind the insert up into arrow.
some at club took bullets and expoxy thembehind the front insert.i believe size was .308 for 2216/2219 arrows.
they come in size 100gr up to 220 gr bullets in that size.

RE: well, I think I finally worked out a good arrow setup
THe best arrow is one that has 24 to 26% F.O.C. These will be the most accurate, close to the fastest and provide good penetration. Finding these parameters maynot result in the "heaviest arrow". There are many arrows that will fullfillthe requirements. To me, it is fun and interesting experimenting with different arrows.
The bottom line is the critter is dispatched in a humane way. Whatever works for you is what you should use!! The critters don't care if they are shot through the bottom of the heart or the top, Dead is Dead!!!!!!!
Using common sense and knowing your limitations, no matter what you use is the key!!

None, except for bigger, tougher game like bears or big pigs.

RE: well, I think I finally worked out a good arrow setup
so, making arrow heavier and shooting to 40 yds max on whitetail deer broadside is really not needed?
but if you are hunting bear which we can here in pa. this year with bow, then extra weight on arrow would be a plus.
i found bear in his den this week,he is one i have seen for 3 years now and i could have taken him this year but he is too small, only 150 pds but has huge head.
