Default 5" drop at 30yrds.

I noticed something interesting... I was sighting my new scope in and the bolts where all grouping great at 20yrds. I went out to 30yrds and every couple shots one would hit either 5" high or low. I stopped shooting off hand andused a shootingstick to hold the bow still. Same thing. I didn't realize immediately that when I bought more target points, the new ones where quite a bit more pointed than the ones that came with bow. (the ones that came with it are very rounded and almost blunt except for the very point.) The new ones werent the longer field point. Just the regular target type. But there was still quite a bit of difference. I am pretty sure that's what was causing the drop. But I wouldn't think the different tips would cause it to drop that much at 30. I'm going to buy some more so they are all the same and see what happens. If that is the case, then I will probablyhave to adjust the tradjectory quite a bit for the spitfires before hunting.

Sounds to me like the target points you bought are not the same weight as the ones you started out with. That is the only thing I can think of that would affect your poi at 30 yards. I havnt been shooting a crossbow for long though, maybe someone with more experience can figure out what is up.

I think you are right. The ones that came with the bow are not marked. I was thinking they were. But I just checked and there are no markings on them.... duh... I better turn the thinking cap on and skip my next dose of morphine!

Couple things can be going on. Even witn a 25 gr. wt. differance between pts. won't make one hit 5" from the rest! Make sure you can tell that exact arrow that is doing the runout! Spin it in yer hand to see if its true or has gotten bent. CK. to make sure arrow vanes are not hitting or rubbing, make sure its the same size arrow 2216's or whatever and not a heavy one got in the bunch. They all have same wt. inserts and noks. I had 3 this morning at different times go a stray. Checked fer bent and they were all good all sized all wt. same. The vanes had come loose and air disruption was causing them to veer off. Each time i found one doing that i layed it aside to be refletched.

Only other thing i can think of is scope, rings and mount. Make sure they are tight, mine worked loose 2 days ago and i was adjusting scope up and down and from side to side and getting abit angry. So i ckecked to see if it was tight, it wasn't. Moving an 1/8" up and down each time i shot.[][:-]

Also say if they are 125 grains instead of your normal 100 grains they would always go down and not both up and down. Shouldn't be that much of a drop either with just an extra 25 grains. So I would look else where like the others said about checking your arrows really good.

I also found out that field tips aren't always exactly what they say also. I got some that are 100 grain and really weigh 97.2 grains. Not that big of deal, but if you want everything equal on your arrows little things like that can add up.

Thanks, scope seems fine. I'm off to buy some more tips. So all are the "same" weight. I'm sure it's the tips. Aerodynamics & weight is maybecausing the difference........That way can I get the bow sighted right. . then check my spitfires. thanks again.

first, i would put bow on sandbags and nice sturdy table..

you could be moving around..

next, if arrows still shoot off, i would check your screws on base of scope..

as smokepole said, if arrow is bent from pulling it out of target, yes, arrows get bent that way,you will get this also,so, spin arrows on table or awshucks marble spinner.....

I got it straightened out. It was the cheap Allen points from walmart. I weighed them and they weigh the same as the others. But they are very blunt. Alot different than the ones that came with bow. I put the original ones back on and no problem. Hitting dead on at 30yrds. I put the walmart ones on.... 4-5" low. I even tried both types with brand new Carbon Strike bolts (new from the pack). Same thing..... I also used digital scales that read to the 1/10 of a gram. Both brands were the same exact weight. My brother-in-law has bow hunted (verticle) since he was a kid and checked the tips out. He said it was kinda unusual that there was that much of a drop. But after he looked at them he said it's because the wally world ones are almost flat due to being so rounded. The other ones are much more tapered. I experimented with every combination and the end result was always the same. The walmart ones' poi was 4-5" lower everytime.

thanks for your help...

chris

(added) - I also tried the original ones at 40 yards. DEAD on.....
