As you see only a few will make the grade at that price fer an outfit. I have shot Hortons and Ten Pts. Those are the only compounds in CB that are worth spending money on. Not! Parker makes a very good CB, but its well over value that you listed. So that brings up the dreaded Excal line of Recurve CB's. I call them Dragon Slayers,Fer $500 you can get great CB,Vixen or Phoenix or Exocet 200. You can pick and choose the acc. you really need to go with it. Rope cocker, stringing aid, extra string and arrows. It comes with peep sights, i used those my 1st year hunting. Then i got scope mount and rings and was given a scope by a great friend. Several of the folks on here gave me strings to use and to try out. Since then i have done same.[8D]

I recomend the PSE Viper Rattler

I was seriously looking at that crossbow when I was looking to buy and found little to no info, reviews or opinions on it so I passed on it just for the fact that I couldnt find anyone who could tell me if it was good or bad, with my main concern being the trigger pull/quality
PSE is a pretty high end bow manufacturer and to look atthe rattlerand readits specs it looks like it would be just as good as anything else out there in its class(maybe better), and you can find package deals for around $300
in fact I still have an interest in it and may pick one up in the future if I can get some positive answers about itsperformance and quality

You can pick up the Horton Yukon XL for 180 bucks as a kit. Itcomes with a pep sight, I took that off and had to buy a scope bar for it and I put a red dot scope on it. Shoots great, for the price. Couldn't justify to my wife spending 500 to a 1,000 dollars on a bow be it compound or crossbow when there are cheaper types out there that shoot just as good as the top of the line models.

RE: name me some nice crossbows under $500
many used crossbows are turning up here in my area of pa.
most have only been shot 20 or 30 times,a lot are hortons..
people went out and bought these kits for 400 dollars, then found out its not as easy as gun to kill a deer..
then they came out with EARLY muzzleloader season which you can use in-line guns with scopes,so a lot of crossbows are now being sold to buy a IN-LINE..
in-line is all rage now here..
i seen 2 year old horton legend/ulta crossbows for 150/200 dollars, hardly used...

Truth is nobody i know wants give up their hard earned coins to put into a CB that doesn't have a proven track record. The few older models PSE put outweren't worth buying. [&o][][:-]

I own the PSE Viper Rattler. It is my first crossbow, so I cannot tell you how it compares to the others. I will tell you that it shoots 17 in bolts. I assume this is how they boast the 285 fps. Had I known that I might have not bought it. I chose it over the Horton Summit because it felt more solid, with less plastic. I currently shoot an 18 in alluminum bolt (very accurately). I think I am going to try 19 in (2219) this year to see how it compares. TheSummit shoots 260, so it might be comparitive. Other than the shorter bolt, I am very pleased. I did purchase a silencer kit, though I imagine all crossbows are a little noisy. I hope this helps and please let me know what you choose and why you chose it.
