O/T Black Walnut????
Got a friend here in Mena, Ar. that has two black walnut tree's in his yard he wants gone. One is just huge, prolly the biggest I've ever seen, 112" circumfrence and about 9' to first branch. Some of the branches are just huge also. The 2nd one is 2' diameter at base, 12' to first branch. I can't find a buyer here who is willing to cut them down and pay $. I've heard stories the stumps are worth alot too, but thought you guys might be able to help me. this has nothing to do w/ xbows except I might buy another one off my cut, lol. Anybody know anything about these?

North American hardwoods is a very depressed market. It isn't what it used to be. When I was in forestry school in the seventies there were stories about tree theives that stole trees from front lawns. Its not like that anymore but a good black walnut tree still gets good money. If you find a specialty hardwood wholesaler then they can tell you which saw mill might be interested. I do not have any contacts in the forestry business but if you are desperate I can try for you. A tree owner can pay a saw mill to cut the tree up and then the tree owner can dry it. If its really big then it may be worth it. Problem is that a core sample may show a lot of heart rot common to older hardwoods.

What about a local mill, they may get inquiries from people looking to get their hands on wood like that, or custom furniture builders..
Here we have a store called Lee Valley, they sell wood like that in small pieces, try to find out who supplies them or some other store that sells high quality wood to project people and get the name of the supplier.
Sure would be a shame to see that in a fireplace..

Here in VA walnut logs bring primo price.
We cut some timber 2 years ago and had one exceptional walnut log that brought $600. My suggestion is to check with local sawmills or lumber yards to see if they buy walnut logs. They shouldalso havea timber cruiserthat could come out and estimate the value of each tree.
If so have a tree trimmer top it and limb it up then just drop the log on the ground and you arrange for hauling to mill. Logs should pay for trimming costs plus leave you with a nice little bonus. Stumps are sometimes usedfor stocks and pistol grips.

Awshucks: Here's some info that might help in determining wether those trees are valuable or not. http://ohioline.osu.edu/for-fact/pdf/0044.pdf From what you have described, neither tree are canidates for veneer logs, as the branches start too low.

Thanks for all the repies and suggestions. This town never ceases to amaze me, pop 7000, got a Mal-Wart, Coast to Coast and an Ace hdwe that just closed up. They haul timber out of here by the truck loads but you can't buy hardwood for cabinets or trim locally. The list of what you can't get here is astonishing, won't bore you w/ that, but as an example I took a jar of change to town to cash out before some one steals it, lol, and none of the 5 or 6 banks have a change counting machine where they just dump it in a hopper and write you a check. I was told it has to be in rolls w/ name and phone # on them, lol. They need a sign at each end of town that says "Welcome to Mena, set your clocks back 20 years."
The only mill interested offered $85 a ton, lol, delivered. We do have: 47 churches, 7 Dollar General stores, umpteen hair, nail and or tanning salons which is great if you want cheap tuna before church where you can compare tans, lol. The people are great though!
