I'm going to have to buy one of those before next fall myself, my son just passed hunters saftey about a week ago, he has a .22, a deer rifle and has had his own bow setup for awhile, so hes pretty set up, about the only thing hedoesnt have is his own shotgun, and he wants one...
he's kind of a little guy and cant handle a full sized shotgun but he's handled and likes the 20ga 870youth model, which means I'm on the look out for one of those...

Dude! Like that gun looks totally cool!!! You must have a great allowance too man!!! LOL!! That was funny.
You probably have most of your info by now, but I think that the pics of shot size where blown up a little, they looked kinda big to me, but it was a good reference. I always use #4 on rabbits and squirrels type of game. I personally think the #6 is to fine for me, always had alot more get away. I also always get the nitro or magnums also. They cost more, but the farther I can shoot and the harder it hits the better to me. Never really used alot of Buck shot since we cant use it for deer around here but have always had some for yotes, but never get to use them. As for your slug gun I would stick with sabots. Most guys can find a sabot that works great for them and only know of one guy that has a barrel that likes riffled slugs better. I have been using the Hornady's SST and that is a real flat shooter out of my 870. The Remington's work great too, but the SST are good out to 150 with no problem for me, you can probably get 200, but that would be pushing it for me. I like the camo too!

RE: Bought my first gun today!
Shotguns are a great thing. But all these new regulations can mess with someones thinking. No lead for this and lead for that.
I have the 870 pump 3" magnum SPT (special purpose turkey). I also believe that I have 8 choke tubes for the gun. What I found was that my shotgun shot Challanger Rifled Slugs through the smooth bore with an open choke better then sabots through the riffled chooke tube. Bouns was that the Challangers were cheaper. But the best results I got with sabots was from LIGHTFIELD sabots. They weee actually cheaper then most as well.
When I used to do alot of hunting with the shotgun, I used #2,4 BB's for Jack Rabbits & fox ....... #7.5 for grouse ........ #5,6 for pheasants ........ buckshot for wolves. I have carried buckshot for deer, but usually always use slugs. You will find that most all guns will shoot different ammo differently and you will need to find which patterns the best with your gun.
Most brand name shells would work great, some of the cheaper can have less power and sometimes, what I call miss shots, where you take a shot that you know should have been a kill but get nothing. I can't ever remember getting shots like that from the quality shells. For my grouse hunting now, all I use is shells from Wallmart (100 for $22 - 7.5). They work good enough for that and great for busting clay piggons when your getting used to shooting the gun. Best factor is the cost, you can shot alot more so getting used to the gun faster.
Good luck and enjoy.

RE: Bought my first gun today!
Did someone say this ain't a shotgun forum? Huh! This forum is for whatever us crossbow shooters dang well want to talk about. Shotguns, rifles, pistols, bows, crossbow, bullets, rocks, dirt, beer or BuddyBo-Gotta-Gos. And if someone says something that someone else takes wrong, then it's explained to them better so they can understand english. If making fun of something or someone was illigal here on this forum, well, I'd have been dropped kicked outta here a long time ago. Noff said.

I had hunted with an 870 for about 15yrs before I gave it away. The first thing I would do is get a limbsaver or kick-eez pad installed on it. That will help out your shoulder. As a slug gun I found itvery accurate, buthigh quality steel rings like Warne and a tough scope is a must. Check out the Bushnell Dawn to Dusk shotgun scope series. Many gun shops and big stores like Gander Mountain willmount and bore sight the scope for you. If that's a rifled slugbarrel, keep in mind it was designed to shoot sabotedammo. You can shoot Foster slugs or bore size slugs, but it will lead up the barrel badly, and it won't be nearly as accurate.

It's amazing how many people own or have owned one of these, and everyone speaks highly of them.. Phew..
I added a scope (with some help from DNK) to both barrels, red dot for my turkey scope and optical one for my rifled.
I believe the camo pattern also doubles as turkey deterrent, It's got to be something, and it just can't be me..
