Attitudes on Xbows
Interesting hearing the views on Xbows. I am new to the sport. Got arthritis in the shoulder and it HURTS to draw my traditional bow. I got started in archery in themid 60's. Shot a Herter's (anyone else remember them?) recurve until I was exposed to compounds. Horse traded for a Carroll compound in 70 or 71 I think it was. Have used that bow ever since. It was always enough bow for me even considering its size and weight. I too remember the uproar about compounds, but it calmed down. I remember when there was quite a bit of concern over mechanical releases. That calmed down also. Never really had an opinion on Xbows, but over the years I listended to a lot of debate on them in the archery shops. Had a friend who let me shoot his older Barnet Xbow, I was amazed. Yes, they are easier to shoot than a traditonal bow, but they seem to have to same hunting and target hadicaps as traditional bows, just easier to hold on target. They ARE NOT the killing machines that the traditional bow shooters fear they are. They can't be used for hunting in Colorado YET, but I hope that changes soon as I can no longer hold at drawand shoot a traditional bow with enough accuracy to hunt. I am sure as more and more hunters find themselves in a position like mine, there will be more support for hunting with Xbows. I have lurked on several of the Xbow forums for quite awhile. Gathering information. :-) Asked a few newbie questions and almost everyone said to shoot or at least hold as many Xbows as I could and pick the one that felt best. Wish I could have done that, but I visited 7 sporting goods and archery shops and found 1 Xbow. So I had to trust what I heard and order online. I just ordered an Excalibur Exomax and accessories. Will be used just for target shooting until the laws change here in Colorado. This is a great forum and the friendliest I have found so far. Thanks to all who have welcomed me.

GNeral I remember the fight at the biginning of the compound, but i have been lucky to hunt in an area that has (in my memory) allwed crossbows forever.
You are also incorrect about not being able to use crossbows in Colorado. Arthritis in the sholder is deemed a disability by most Dr's and back in 2002-2003 a disabled hunter in Col sued and won the right to use the crossbow. Here is part of postings from back then.
Since that date, I know that crossbows has opened up right across the country because of his Federal Suit he won. Some States opened up crossbows totally to everyone after some residents filed against them. You see the Federal Government ruled that they cold not EXCLUDE crossbows from the disabled, as well, they could NOT CHARGE them any fees that other hunters were not charged (no fees for the permits, unless abled bodied hunters were charged the same fees).
IF I was you, I would look into the permitfor your personal use.
Good luck.

My name is Tom LaQuey, My email address is [email protected] I live in Colorado and just won a case through the US Department of Justice and the US Department of the Interior against Colorado concerning their discrimination of me for not allowing me a disabled[/b] individual to use a crossbow in the bow seasons here. Because of my complaint Colorado finally issued 12 crossbow accommodations last year. They are still too restrictive in their requirements and it will take a few more complaints by others before we open it up the way it should be for the disabled[/b] bow hunters.
...........
Talk to every disabled[/b] hunter you can and ask them to apply as well. They don't need a hunting license in the state to apply for a crossbow accommodation. I am trying to make the snowballs grow. I want to see the US Department of the Interior having to decide thousands of discrimination complaints for disabled[/b] hunters all over the US and we will soon see the crossbow not disputed anywhere the disabled[/b] need it to hunt as an equal to whole bodied hunters anywhere.

RE: Attitudes on Xbows
Gnerol, I hunt in Colorado with my crossbow. I just hunt in the rifle seasons. Colorado has a lot of opportunities for rifle hunters. For example, last year in my hunt unit (20) I got a private land tag for bucks that lasted 4 months- much longer than the archery season. I took a nice buck with the crossbow in Nov. (see "The Thousand Shot Buck" in this forum if interested in the story). The year before, I had a rifle tag for a cow elk that I harvested with my crossbow. Some of the rifle seasons are fairly short, but most late seasons (in some units) last 12 days. For me, if I can hunt the full 12 days, it usually enough time to get several chances at animals. My buck last year was taken on day 8 and I had passed up somesmaller bucksbefore that. There's a rifle bear hunt in Sept. that's during the archery season that's actually longer than the archery bear season. Where do you live in Colorado? I'm in Estes Park.

Grumpy Tom & grndhntr. Thanks for the info about Colorado Xbow hunting, I just looked at the archery season rules. I do not want to claim to be disabled, I am not. It just hurts too much to draw and hold my traditional bow. Gives me the shakes and my accuracy goes to heck. I will not take the chance on wounding an animal. I did not know it was legal to hunt with an Xbow during the rifle seasons. I guess that would be better than nothing, but I quit hunting during the rifle seasons after being shot at. Not sure I want to be in the woods with the sound shooters again. grndhntr I live a short ways up the Poudre Canyon, North and West of Ft. Collins. I will definitely look up your post about the "thousand shot buck". Thank you very much for the info. It is nice to know there are options even here. Sure wish I could understand why the traditional bow hunters are SO against Xbows.

Hi GNerol.
They are scared that a CB hunter might shoot " thier " BUCK...But like was said earlier.
Crossbows are more traditional then Compounds...also they think the woods would become shoulder to shoulder with hunters..Heck just go out opening gun season, its a war zone..................
Iam also a compound and Trad shooter but due to nerve damage I cant draw thos anymore, hopefully I will be able to shoot my Trad bows again.

Welcome to the forum GNero, That makes 3 old farts, your story sounds like mine even the same timelines. I started out with a Shakespear recurve in the sixities then went to a compound in the seventies, me and Arther started running around together in the eighties, I held him off till 2002 before he whooped my ---. I got my handicap permit in 03 and joined the excalibur forum to get my training wheels. Alot of us have been where you are now. These old and young farts will help you on your journey. PS REb I still have some of the Herters hand loaders cost $5.98
