Jason, to each his own, but the Deer Chow is a complete balance for deer and does not need a supplement. You're spending the extra cash when you don't need to.

Rub, it should save me some money. The deer chow that you recommended and I plan on getting is 10.95 for 50#at my local supply. Corn is 4.00 for 50# and rolled oats are 6.00 for 50#. So if I put 150# in my feeder of just deer chow it will cost me 32.85. If I put a mix of all three it will cost me 21.95, a third less. I think I can slide 22 bucks buy momma on pay day with out her noticing, but 33 will raise an eyebrow if ya know what I mean.

Did the math Reb and here is what I cam up with, I also left out the soybeans in my post. From what I read in the management forums Soybeans are supposed to be the best for protein, and it takes very little to get the deer used to eating them, but in my area the deer have been eating them for a while so they should have no problem with them. Here is the break down on 200 pounds of feed and what I think you will get if you do it percent protein per pound per dollar. If my math is right!?!
Deer Chow, 20% protein 10.95 for 50# will buy 200# at total cost of 43.80 for the protein it would be 20% of 200 which is 40# of protein at a cost of 1.095 per pound of protein.
A mix of Corn @ 6.00 for 50#, Oats@ 6.00 for 50#, Deer chow @ 10.95 for 50#, and soybeans @ 7.00 for 50#. For a total cost of 29.95 For the protein it would be Corn (10% of 50) 5#, Oats (10% of 50) 5#, Deer Chow (20% of 50) 10# and soybeans (40% of 50) 20# Total that up and I have 40# or protein at a cost of .748 per pound of protein.
Also soybeans range in protein from 35 to 45%, I just went with 40 for a middle number.
According to some links in the management forum soybeans is the kicker when you are after protein. There is a link in there to a site that talks about it. But like others it needs to be mixed with something to give a better mix in the feed.

I mix 80% Soy Bean Meal to 20% Trace MineralSalt for my steers as a Protein Supplement during the Winter. The salt controls the amount of Soy Bean Meal they consume.
A very good Protein Supplement that all Animals can consume is Purina Calf Manna.
