Deer Experts ?
If all vegitation is frozen in the mornings and it takes several hours to thaw. Is there any reason to be out on a stand from before daylight and thru that time frame? Or would it be better to wait and get on the stand about 9 am in the morning?

Deer do not pay any attention to that particular fluction. I used to live in the north and it did not thaw to any great exten from mid nov till mid march they keep eating more in relation to the moon and wind than any thing else I believe. Lee

I got this big ole piece of plastic I cover up my corn field with at night and just before climbing up in my stand in the morning, I yank off the plastic really quick and RUN up the steps of my stand and hide real good before they see me. Then I get deer at first light and they don't have to worry about corn thawing out. I also take a big stick and break up all the frozen water holes for them to drink easy.

Hey figured i needed check cause after 45 years of hunting i am being skunked. Not the first clear shot on 29 deer, only 3 Bucks and 26 Doe's and fawns, must be same group over and over again. Haven't saw first Buck crusing or chasing Doe's all this season. High school boy has pulled cable pins on both climbers has run his 4 wheeler almost every nite chasing the deer all over the combined bean field.

Mike, don't feel bad. Deer move more during cold weather because they need more calories to burn. My biggest enemy this year was wind and hunting pressure this year. I just came back from a 500 acre area 2 hours away that had probably 30 deer three weeks ago. Well look like they all yarding now, they've all gone. New snow on the ground for 18 hrs and maybe three animals! Answer to your question, yes they are still diurnal and do their most travel between just before sunset to just after sunrise. Do you see fresh tracks ever? In my limited experience you should be sitting QUIET and MOTIONLESS at least an hour before sunrise in shooting range of a trail or area that deer are using now.

I usually am in my stand at 6 am leave about 9 am come back at 2:30 pm. Haven't saw a deer in a full week. Have had lots of rain 50 mph winds as long as 3 days straight. Just too much going against me and now about 30 hunters within a sq. mile.[&o]
