Hotburn, if the paper is 2" in front of the target I don't think it's enough pressure to open the head before it actually hits the target.Shouldn't it be on the front of the target so when it opens it shows the marks?

I think you may be right because you read his question right and I read it wrong. I thought he was talking about his heads opening up before the target and the paper test in front of the target is a way to tell if you are getting premature openings. I think he wants to know if they are opening up as they get into the target or staying closed and I have no idea how to tell that.

The paper goes a few inches ahead of the target to see if the blades open in during flight. It would be pretty hard to see when they open upon impact. By virtue of design some have no choice but to open on impact. When exactly can only be determined in the medium in question. ie: shooting into an oranage or grapefruit will show you how fast a mechanical will open but only in realative (to each other) terms. This is illustrated by the size of the broadhead cut on entry and exit of the fruit. The only way is to shoot into a deer. Some mechanicals do not even try to open on entry. I forget the name of it but it appears from pictures that I've seen that they don't need an entry hole because the exit can only be termed gaping! I know for sure my Wasp Jackhammers open fast enough to give me two good holes from the deer that I've put down so I'm happy. From everything I've read Slick Tricks leave nothing to be desired. On the other hand JimC who is a world class crossbow competitor and hunter uses mechanicals for his hunting.

The paper test works great to let you know if they are blowing the rings off in flight, but how can I tell if they are opening on impact?
