RE: How to figure down range velocity and energy??
My friends i have come forth to ask you to return to the posts that was starting thread. We have all had fun and amusement and got to cut up abit. Continue the gun issues in proper forum or via private pm's, thank you. Invoking sites rules at this time. Lets get on to xbow issues and use of it in hunting. I repeat don't add anything to this threat other than orignal intent!

I live in a "dry" county in Arkansas. I can get Oklahoma beer [3.2%] 8.6 miles away, commonly referred to as rhymes w/ Hiss on the Move LOL. It's 86 miles to get real American beer, same distance as my nearest pro-shop. The UPS driver is my best friend, and I don't even know his name LOL. I drive at a higher velocity on the way there than the trip home, cause a 30 pack is "over the limit" on possession of alcohol. Welcome to Arkansas, set your watch back thirty years!!! Also the main reason for my facination w/ Excals, I can do it all right here. Popcorn is much closer.

Planter, you asked about down range velocity and energy, correct?
I don;t know if this was answered in here somewhere, but initial energy is not the same and the only way to get the other would be to know how fast the bolt slows down as it travels. The easiest way would be to set up a chronograph at measured distances and get your velocity that way. Even bullets from firearms are and averageamount comparing ballistic coefficients for speed loss (deceleration) for a type of projectile. And that is affected by air density, wind, humidity, etc and I don;t know of any standard from anyone that will let you calculate that for a specific bolt, head, fletch, etc so to find your energy atX yards downrange you will need the chronograph.
The formula for Ek, kenetic energy is all you need for energy calculation once you have your wiegth and velocity at a set distance.

All true. I believe, but am not 100% sure that Excals site, possibly 10 pts and for sure the Italian site linked on another thread all have tables to determine this. IMHO, if you have a bunch to begin w/ it all comes out good down range. It seems most compounds need an arrow weight above 415 gr, and w/ fps in the 280-300 plus range, we would have enough k.e. out to at least 50 yds. Which is a little too far for white tail for me, but the k.e. is there.
