how to tell old rubs

Default how to tell old rubs

How can you tell a old rub from the year before or years before? If someone could answer this it would be help full. Thanks

Usually, if the previous years rubs were sufficient enough to damage the tree, you will see a dark area on the tree where a rub would normally occur. Also, many times the bark will still be damaged and is normally very dark. This has been my experience.

I agree with Belle Island, Take your knife and scrape the bark off of a tree and you will see exactly what a fresh one looks like...It takes several weeks to turn dark....I saw some fresh rubs already, on 9-10-2002.......

I can tell by how dark it is. An old rub will be darker from the dirt getting on the tree. A fresh one will be cleaner 'cause the dirt was rubbed off when the tree was rubbed.

a fresh rub will have sap around the damaged part and be much lighter. Most of the time the ground will be stomped down where the buck has been standing when he was rubbing the tree.
