RE: First bow for my 5 year old....any advice?
I got my daughter a genesis and I really like it. Doesn't have a set draw length and can be pulled back to 30" A little bit heavy though. My 11 year old daughter gets tired holding it at arms length. It doesn't have any letoff. set at 20#, you hold 20#. The biggerst advantage is that they can grow with it as far as draw length.

I really don't think the bow is real important at 5 yrs old as opposed to him starting out right. Its always tough to break bad habits as you get older but then again it needs to be fun for him too. Do you know what his dominate eye is? If his a lefty like me, poor kid. Good luck, Bobby

I do not think the genesis can be shot by a 5 year old. MY boy at 4 could not shot it. I got him a low compound then shortened the string to make the bow draw to fit him. It did make the bow allmost role over but he can draw it and shoots well. I put a ton of twist in the string yery few weeks i take some twist out.
PM me when your going to get one if my son can shot his nest bow then I will send you this one for postage. Like $5 i think would need ot know where you live :} I would love to see it go to 1 more kid and not in the closet.

Flipout!
I started both my kid's off with a small recurve that you can pick up for about 30.00 including a few arrow's to go with it .After they started to get the basic's down on how to handle a bow ,I went and bought the BowTech rascal but I don't think you want to get into that kind of money yet for a couple of year's .The small recurve give's them the idea about how to hold the bow ,how to draw the bow and give's them an Idea on how to aim without using any kind of accessories .Then the next step is to get them into a compound like the rascal or some of the other brand's such as the Mathew's Genisis or other brand's on the market today which there are many to choose from .This bow will also develop their form before they have to consentrate on too many other issue's such as peep sight's and sight's and arrow rest's when drawing. Once they have the recurve down pat then they'll be ready to advance on these other's without having to think about too many thing's at once.

This board is great. Thanks all for your replies and advice. I think I am leaning on a cheapie type of recurve as he is pretty young and a little on the timid side. He loves to shoot his nerf bow but this will be a new world for him. (I know he will love it because he will watch me shoot and he makes pretend he is shooting as well)
ELKINMTCWB...thank you for your kind offer. I will keep it in mind when I am ready. I really appreciate it.
I can't wait till it gets warmer and I can go out and shoot again. I may have to get him his bow early so he can shoot with me once this snow melts off.
Thanks again everyone.
