How can they be yearlings when they are over 1 year old? That doesn't make sense to me. Around here we have always called yearlings the deer that were dropped this year.

A 1 1/2 year old is called a yearling around here. 6month old are called fawns. I've never heard anybody call fawns yearlings except on here.

Actually, the true definition of a yearling is a deer in it's second year of life, or between 1 and 2 years old. Fawns are technically deer less than one year old. Call them what you want, but just know that in discussions with biologist, deer managers and anyone who does this for a living, the term yearling refers to the correct definition; an animal between 1 and 2 years old. If you call a fawn (a deer less than one year old) a yearling, you are actually misusing the word, but as long as those you are talking to understand what you mean, go for it.
The problem comes in when people use yearling to describe a fawn, it can be a little confusing to people who know what a yearling is. But, we eventually figure out what you mean after a little while.

I always called a fawn a yearling but now I know better. You can't argue with Mr. Webster. This is a little off the subject but I once had another hunter tell me he shot a 1 1/2 year old button buck. I thought to myself, whatever makes you feel better about yourself. Really theres nothing wrong with it. Matter of fact there very tasty.

In any QDM, a yearling is in fact a 1 1/2 year old animal and a fawn is exactly that... a FAWN. I also have never seen or heard anyone call a FAWN a yearling except on this board?
