Got him, now mount him?
I just got my first antlered buck this year. It had 5pts on one side and the other was a single point but was thirteen inches long. It streched down past its cheeck and then curved back up. It was the wildest thing. I called him in from about 150 yrds all the way to 24 yrds.
So i want to mount the sucker, but i am not to sure about cutting the skin and head off. my father and i do our own butchering. so if anybody knows how to cut the deer so i can mount it, it would be greatly appericated. I was thinking of a shoulder mount if it matters any.
Thanks Again

You'll need to cape your deer... better left for the person you choose to do the mount if you've not caped one before. It's hard to explain without pictures... but I imagine that you could find a link to a step by step "here's how" webpage if you browsed a bit. Congrats on your deer... he sounds like a nice one.

You need to take the cape from behind the shoulders and down around his chest behind his front leg's in order to leave lot's of cape for the Taxidermist ,if you plan on a full mount . If you have this month's North American Hunter magazine there is an article in there that show's you how to cape for a head mount.
I'd sure like to see some pic's of him .

Just as nubo said, skin him from behind the front shoulder down around the front legs, the more hide the taxidermist has the better.Be sure not to cut the hide or nick it as its more work for the taxidermist and may not turn out as nice as you would like.If you havent caped out a deer before then maybe you are best to get someone who has, and help along the way.Best way to learn, and take your time.Take the head and hide into the taxi and he will take care of the rest.Another thing,I find it best to cape a deer when its hung for a few days and cold, seems to come off alot easier.
This is one I got last year and a friend helped me.Seemed to turn out great.

Like the others said, be sure to leave plenty of skin. As a taxidermist, I hate to get in a deer cape and have to tell the customer that he cut it too short for a shoulder mount. It's easy to do that, though -- you usually need to leave on more skin than you'd think. I have some people leave the entire back hide on the cape, that eliminates the worry of not leaving enough skin. But in general, if you cut well behind the front legs, it should be plenty. And make sure to leave plenty of brisket, too.
Just skin it up to the head and leave a little of the neck on for measuring purposes. Don't try to skin out the head -- that's where it gets tricky !

If possible let the taixiderist do it. If you are inexperienced one slip of the knife could mess up your mount. If you decide to cape it out yourself, leave plenty of excess skin- cut around the mid section of the deer at the minimum.

Thanx nubo.pictures dont do it justice. He is a 12 point with a small 1.5 inch kicker in his base making him I guess a 13.His bases are a little over 5 inches in circumference and his spread is 20 inches inside.I scored him myself and came up with around 160 gross.I'll try to get more pics on if ya like.
