RE: What score do you go by? NET or GROSS??
Now on a side note are there still people measuring by the buckmasters credit system.I havent heard anything about this scoring method for quite some time,It only makes scence to me to score every inch the animal grew without deductions and not measuring air as well.(meaning inside spread)If I have the scoring technique of the buckmasters credit system wrong then I would hope someone would set me straight
I think you should go by the gross score when you are telling someone about your deer. I will give you an example. This deer in the picture gross' right at 160" typical. After all the deducts he nets just under 135". Now tell me, would you want to tell someone that you shot this deer and it is a 130 inch deer. Don't think so. I later had it scored as a non typical and it netted 168 6/8 NT, that's an all together different story though. It was a long process and don't want to get into that story. Anyway, this is a perfect example of the difference of a net and gross score .

SCORE???? WHAT'S a Score??? They're either "Nice Deer, Big Deer or BODACIOUS". That's the only score I've ever gone by other than weight... and I guess that's always NET(with guts removed).

The principles of the Boone and Crocket and Pope and Young system (same system, different standards) of scoring was originally devised to score "horn" not antler. This system was then implemented on antlers. Symmetry is much more prevalent with horn configuration than antler. It's always perplexed me that this system would be used on antler.
The gross score before any deductions of an animal with antlers is truely the only way to give it credit for the antler it grew. As for Net Typical and Net Nontypical ( the main frame still gets deducted for asymetrical tines in Nt score) these scores demote any buck that does not have symmetry in his main frame.
I feel as many hunters do, the system does NOT reflect a true representation of what a buck packed on his head.
