You are assuming that all that have misplaced stands are a-holes. Although there are always gioing to be those types of people, not all are. Once you find out they are a-holes, then feel free to go to guerrilla tactics if you want. There are things as misunderstandings and misguided mistakes. Sometimes you need to see first what the situation is.

find out weather or not the stand was put in by a youth hunter, i know growing up and huntng by myself alot i ventured into property that was posted and build treestands. and of coarse i got told about it, the last thing you want to do is discourage our future generation, of hunters. if it is a youth i would make him come in and take it back down and leave it at that. it will be a lesson well learnt.

I don't care by who or why the stand got put up on my property ,
if I didn't invite you then you're trespassing and you can expect to be cited and/or lose your stand . I might be nice and give it back once , but not twice . The second time I catch you I'm very likely to be surly and armed . [:@]

Its hard to say without actually knowing the situation and seeing the area. If you have a physical barrier around your property, like a fence of some sort that they would have had to gone over and no hunting signs every hundred or so feet around the perimeter then it is pretty obvious they knew better. I mean 60 or 70 yards, they are basically hunting your fence line from the wrong side. If that is not the case, then 60 yards isn't very much to be off when you are in the woods (unless it is surrounded by a field or something and its pretty clear where the property lines are). They may be wrong, and you could be wrong. Wouldn't you look like an ass if you were wrong.
If its absolutely clear that they knew it was your property and knowingly put a stand there any way you could do any number things mentioned above. Take the stand down and just not say anything, they will get the point. Leave a note asking why they put it there and to call, I doubt they will though. Or try to catch them in it, I don't suggest this, armed physical confrontations don't always come out well. Myself, I'm not realy big on confrontations to begin with, in person or on the phone. I would just take the stand down and be done with it. I might leave a note on the tree, but I'm not sure. I would check local laws first though. It may not be legal to destroy personal property even if it is on your land. You would be surprised at how many screwed up laws there are and how they could be interpreted. Lets say your vehicle breaks down on someone elses property, whether you knew you were there or not, does that give them the right to shoot it full of holes? I doubt it, and the same law could apply to this stand. It would be pretty stupid to get sued over something like this, but I know people that would do it. Of course if it is mature hardwood tree you could counter sue for the damage to the tree (VERY expensive!).
I highly doubt callin the DNR or local police would get you very far, but you could try it as a last resort and see what happens. It just seems like they have better things to do than deal with this sort of stuff.
If you think it could have been a mistake, like you don't have a fence and your property is not clearly marked ( 3 no hunting signs on a 100 acre lot is not well defined), or if you think it was a youth hunter then I would try to clear things up amicably. You never know, you might end up liking the guy and give him permision to finnish the season. If it is someone young, maybe tell them not to come back the rest of this season to teach them a lesson, but suggest if they come back later and ask properly you might be willing to let them hunt. That's how kids learn how to do things right. Just freaking out on them doesn't really teach them much except that adults are jerks, and they already think that any way. However if the kid is a total butt head and has no remorse tell him to get the stand out your property and ask that he not come back, same as you would with an adult.
And by the way, they are not your deer, they are the states deer unless you raised them in a pen. You own the property not the game on it.
Good luck with what ever you decide

These are all valid points. On the property My wife and I own we posted it aswell as painted purple streeks on the trees, In Missouri these streeks signifie posted property for those who claim they can't read. I would say be civil at first to feel him or her out. if they are being a bung hole then return the favor. post your land and keep the stand intact. i assume it's wood and the guy probably wouldn't want to take it down and try and attach to another tree, usually permant stands are built for a specific tree. keep it and let it be known that your a hunter and the land will be patrolled. just my 2 cents

RE: New Stand On Our Land & Its Not Ours!!!
My in-laws retired out in the country. The first deer season I was hunting and heard some shouting and later more shouting and gun shots. My father in law was hunting out of a ground blind when the movie cast of Deliverance started walking through the woods. He told them he was the new owner and they could hunt it the following week but not while we were there. They had built 2 stands and told him they were going to hunt where ever they wanted. This was the first yelling. I did not know all of this until later. He went up to the house called the sheriff said people were threating his life and to hurry. He went back out where they parked in his cornfield. Shot their van up with his pistol(Never said he was playing with a full deck) then waited for them with his rifle and was ready to take everyone on when the sheriff and state trooper show up. He explains his story, the morons come out of the woods, all had some kind of warrant and they all go to jail.
I certainly don't recommend this course of action but he was worried about the rest of us with young hunters trying to enjoy ourselves. I just wish he would have came and told us before he took action. We havent had a problem since then but I would not be very patient when someone sets up on your own private land. Give em one shot to explain and them tell them bye bye. If it is a true mistake and they are true men they will apologize and ask what can be done to make it right. If they take it any other way you need to take swift action one way or another.
A farmer asked some tresspassers to leave last year and when they refused he came back with a tractor and towed their truck away..can't say that was the right thing to do but it sure was funny!
