Finally after 2 years of not harvesting a deer do to a car accident that put me out of commision and a lot of close calls this year I finally got my deer. It was a long time coming too.

Well I went out and walked away from my truck about 4:30 , A bit too late but never the less I was off to a new spot that I had picked out last year and didn't hunt this year. Well I had a new tree that I had picked out earlier this year while hunting in a new spot. But I needed to do some tree trimming to be able to get my climber buch shots big shot tree stand ( love it by the way) So I am working my way up the tree and trimming as I go and am getting near the top and where I want to be and I look behind me for no reason and I see a doe trotting around me and a buck just standing there wondering what was going on. Well he was not big at all maybe a 6 or 7 pointer that was maybe 1.5 or 2.5 year old. I had no desire to take him but I did want the doe. I didn't even have my bow up the tree yet but was able to get it up the tree without the buck noticing. He was about 50 yards away at this time. But he kept looking for where that doe ran and then just followed her walking away feeding casually. This was all kind of cool as all this took place in the first 10 minutes there.

So after all that I am feeling real good so I sit back and relax. About 1/2 hour goes by and I hear foot steps to my right and here comes about 8 does but they are a bit out of range do to cover but take note for next time. Well No shots as they all passed without ever noticeing me so I feel good about this spot. Then just before I am thinking that was it for the day I see a deer come from infront of me and a little to the right of me and its a fawn. So I am thinking well moma is not far away and I get into position for a shot and wait. I see the bigger deer with that fawn which was out of spots so not that young. And I am picking my shooting lane that she might pass so I can get a shot. So I see where she is going and give a soft grunt and the bigger deer stops right there and I let her have it and she drops on the shot. I had to get down fast as she was still alive but down. So I get up to her? and give here one in the boiler room. Oh reason I didn't shoot while in the tree is that she? Went down behind some brush. I did try a shot and it was just too thick so that is why I got down fast. Well after that second shot she? was done in seconds. Less that 20. So I go back to my stand and get everything in order and take my stuff back to the truck and just have my light and fanny pack for gutting. Well I get there and am get my tag out and look at the deer and say thanks to the deer for this opertunity and giveing her? life for me and the challange of the great chase. Well I am admiring her? and look between her? legs and see !!!! You guessed it YUP a button buck. Now I am sick. I would never shoot a button buck on purpose. Now all my excitement is totally gone and I feel aweful. I mean I feel like crapola. I mean I know the signs to look for but was totally wrong here. There was no bumps on the head at all just hair. You had to feel the head to feel the small bumps on his head but wasn't noticeable at all. This was a first for me guys. I have passed all kinds of button bucks and fawns and young bucks like 6 's and small 7 's so I am trying to get a buck bigger than my 8 pointer I get 3 years ago. So I wont shoot a buck unless it is bigger.

Well I also did my first butcher job on a deer after my wife got me some videos on butchering so I gave it a shot and was suprised to see how easy it was to do. So I got him in the freezer now and looking forward to some fine eating tomorrow.

I feel real bad right now but am a little excited to have gotten a deer after 3 years of waiting.

Take care

Brian

Oh I forgot to tell you that the first shot that put him down was a spiner. So that is why I used a finisher.

Well Brian I'm so happy for you after all this time. I started to wonder why all the ? marks after you refered to deer as a doe so I knew something was up. Someone mentioned about everyone making mistakes, I don't look at it as a mistake, I'm sure you wern't checking between the legs before the shot . You have become a very consiencenious hunter so don't feel bad. I remember being on that hunt with you when you took your first buck three years ago and how excited you were so after your long setback I'm sure you are very excited, don't let the fact that it was a button blimish the moment. Good to see you back in the woods again. Great story.

It is good to see you being able to be back in action 445 supermag!

Don't feel bad or guilty over this issue...perhaps Mother Nature knew it was meant to be. Years ago I shot a buck that was missing a pedicle. In other words he was never going to grow anything there on his head. The skull plate under his right side was just like that of a doe. Just one of Ma Natures oddities.

The important thing, is that you are back doing what you enjoy. Keep it up.
