Default Ode to the bowhunter..

In the dark I look above at the ageless and timeless beauty of the stars shining through the deep black. I am alone in the woods, heading for my ambush site, heading for my encouter, and full of anticipation. While I have many brothers afield, I am all alone here, can anyone appreciate what I feel? Can anyone love this sport more than I? In the distance I can here a bugle echo off the mountain slopes. I can hear the faint running of a distance stream careening down the mountain as it begins it's long journey to the ocean. Slowly, the light begins to invade the cover of darkness and with it the promise of a new day. The mountians spring to life as if the sun were leading the orchestra. The bull moves closer and I look down at the punty bow and arrow in my hand. The mountians now tower in the eastern sky serving as a reminder of my own smallness. This place was here long before I came, and will be here long after I am gone, and the unforgiving mountains will never care. The bull escapes me on this day, as he and his brothers have so often done. He belongs to this place, and this place to him. He is the rockies, and the rockies are him. Maybe, just maybe, in my frequent trips to this valley, I too can become a part of this place, and this place a part of me. Alas, my union with these slopes is but fleeting, cast into the deep recesses of my mind, until another season, another day. When I leave this world, let me leave as the old bull, lying down, gazing at the stars, and remembering the valleys I have walked, dreaming of the ones I have yet to walk, and the one I must go down.

Muley69,

You, sir, are mightily gifted in the "word-smith" department. That was one of the best pieces I have ever read on here.

Write on!!

You have captured and put into words what most of us can only experience through the senses of our emotions but are unable to communicate it in written or oral form.

What an awesome piece!!! You need to write more!

I will look forward to seeing future posts from muley69.
