Ongoing trials of new hunter no shot ( my son ) !!
Tonight my 12 year old son made me proud !!!! I let a 8 pt chasing and fighting with a 6 pt walk by my stand without taking a shot, ( have seen larger deer in the area). Anyways they headed right towards my sons stand and about a minute later I hear a doe call.
This all happened about 6:15pm tonight so around 6:45pm I get down out of the stand and walk towards my sons stand. When I get there he says " Dad I saw an eight pt and a 6 pt fighting, I called with the doe call and they both came towards me and the 8 pt stood perfectly broadside. I then asked " well I see you still have all your arrows, what happened"? He replied " well he was at approx. 25 yards and I only have a 10, 15 and 20 yard pin, I did not feel comfortable taking the shot.
At this point I ask him were the deer was standing and he points out a stump in the distance were the deer was standing next to. I throw up the range finder and show him that it reads 27 yards. I then asked him what he did after he called with the doe call? He replied " well after I called I raised my bow and drew back but when they finally stopped coming towards me and turned broadside I knew I could not make a comfortable shot".
I must have told him 50 times on the way out of the woods how proud I was of him for not taking a shot he had not practiced for and remembering what I had taught him. I just had to come here and and tell someone, I am beaming with pride at the moment and had to share it with you guys/gals
EDIT: We are heading back out at 5:00 am tomm. , I hope he gets a chance at a deer.

Dang!! Talk about shot control! I know plenty of kids who would have taken that shot. It is even more tempting to take that shot by yourself. You should be very very proud of him.

Way to instill good morals in the next generation. Those are the type of people I'd love to have hunting near me. Not like the crazies around here in state land...[:'(]

I wish 99% of the guys I know had YOU as a father... Tell your son MATHEWSBOY is VERY PROUD OF HIM.. my son is 4 1/2 and I'll be doing my best to instill the same patience in my son as you did yours...
GREAT JOB>>
Goodluck hunting..
Just for that, I hope your son shoots a monster now... Patience is Virtue.. Victory will even be sweeter now when he does shoot one.. Especially that 8

He's already a better hunter than quite a few out there. Congrats to him and to yourself on doing such a great job!! I wish him all the luck in the world. Hopefully something comes within range for him soon.

Southern dave!
You bet we're all proud of him, he's a very smart young man and he's obviously being taught by the best there is .Congrat's to you and your son and tell him that the next one will likely be an even bigger buck because he's got the smart's to lay off when he's uncomfortable with the shot .
I feel good thing's will happen for this young man with that kind of control.

Well we hit the woods early this morning and I reminded my son that if he had not taken a deer by today I was going to put some meat in the freezer. Result: Around 07:50 big fat doe walks within 25 yards of the old mans stand ( old man thats me), at 0:750 and 3 seconds doe recieves a double lung heart pass through from the old man ( once again thats me, hehe). Runs barely 20 yards and piles up in the brush.
I wait my normal 30 minutes eventhough I know it was a perfect hit on her. Go get son and have him track her for the little distance she ran ( nice little tracking training for him). He finds her and says" ok ok Dad so you can shoot in the woods as good as you shoot on the range". I laugh and we tag/gut and drag her out.
Sooooooooooo, old man 1, son zero.

That's a great story Dave and thank you for sharing it with us. Perhaps it might make some else think before they shoot and take a lesson from your sons ethics and honor. Like was said above, you should be proud and that hunt alone is a major success in the world of hunting. Regardless if your son shoots a buck or not with his bow, he's a true bowhunter in every sense of the word. Relay that to him and high five him from all of us here. Thanks.
