RE: NON-TRADITIONAL SHOT PLACEMENT?
This is the first year I tried an "iffy" shot with the bow. The buck was quartering to me, but he was only about 15 yards away. I thought about not shooting at first, but I had my pin on the perfect spot for a while and he never budged. I knew the arrow would at least get into the first lung, hit the vessels coming out of the heart and possibly clip the back of the off-side lung or liver on it's way out. That deer didn't go far. Normally, I try for a broadside lung shot with the bow. Too many things can go wrong and you need a big target. I've had MANY deer jump the string.
I shot a caribou with a rifle about 10 years back. It was about 150 yards off and I was shooting standing up and freehand. I aimed for the lungs and it dropped at the shot. When I got up there, I saw the bullet went in its neck and out its eye socket.
