Deer Calls
Maybe a stupid question, but while I understand the concept of a deer call bringing in deer, I don't really know the details of it. With my deer call, I can make buck, young buck, doe and fawn sounds. What responds to what calls and when is a good time to use them? A monster 8 point walked past my stand about 60 yards out and into a field and I wanted to try calling him back, but from what I was told he most likely wouldn't respond anyways. I also didn't want to scare away a smaller buck who was heading towards my buddy's treestand. I had tried stopping a doe earlier in the night and she didn't seem to care either. Too early in the season? Not the right calls? How's this all work?

RE: Deer Calls
In my experience,Early on a contact grunt from a young buck works well,If he is a fighter I might try to be more aggresive. If he's walking away you got nothing to loose, whatever he hears he'll either respond or not and walk away casually.I also like to rattle early also, hit the horns lightly as if 2 young bucks were just sparring, getting the pecking order in check. That has worked real well for me.Also I like to put down buck urine and maybe make a mock scrape.Good Luck

RE: Deer Calls
So youre saying for a young buck I should use a young buck grunt, but what about all the others? I was told a mature buck grunt will often scare away young bucks, but bring in big bucks and curious does. Isn't there a least out there that says which call is for which animal? Sure would make things easier.

RE: Deer Calls
I must have the same call as you pennhunter or at least close, its got all the same choices. anyways i tried them all this weekend, at bucks and does who were walking towards, away and under my stand. i had absolutley no response positive or negative they acted like they didnt hear it. i have no experience with these either as this is the first season ive ever used them. i thought they would at least react negatively. i even grunted at a yearling that was 20yrds and she didnt care at all.

RE: Deer Calls
When there were 3 bucks about 70-80 yards away from me and walking away at the same time, I gave a couple grunts and it did nothing, I waited a couple minutes, gave a doe bleat, but not too loud..and I heard one kinda grunt and all 3 of their heads popped up. (they were eating in a bean field) I got the same reaction out of them every time that I did this..they never did get spooked from it, they were just wondering where the hell she was..

RE: Deer Calls
I remember one time I slid my O-ring down on my call to the fawn bleat. Not having any action that night I thought I'd give this a try. I started doing a fawn in distress call. Pretty much making it sound like it was crying. My idea was for another deer to hear and think the fawn was about to be attacked or hurt. Sure enough, had a nice 6 pointer come bustin through the timber jumped a small ditch and stopped about 10 yards in front of me. He was throwing his head around in all directions lookin for the fawn. It was a neat experience. I usually have my true talker set for a doe bleat. I've had plenty of deer resond to it. Bucks and Does. Good Luck Guys! C. H.
