Dig in the ground?
I have a post now on scent blocking in the woods (check it out...I need some advice), but I also have a "tip" I heard a buddy say he uses and I was curious if any of you have tried it or have heard about it.
It basically boils down to this... Deer are attracted to the scent of the earth...that "natural" smell. So, when he arrives in the woods, he finds areas around his stand, not directly on deer trails/rubs/scrapes and he literally digs into the soil. He creates several of these human scrapes and then rubs the soil on his clothes and portions of his body, most notably in his hair. Supposedly, this earthy scent is what the deer are most attraced to and he claims it works.
Ever heard of this?

I think he's waiting for the day you walk up to him after a long days hunt looking like you just got done wrestling a pig covered head to toe with dirt, that'll give him a good laugh.
Actually in all honesty I have never heard of "earth" scent being used as an attractant. I have however seen it being used as a cover scent which I can understand. But I really can't see how deer are attracted to dirt, heck it's all around them all day.

If you need a deer to stop in a shooting lane, scratch up the leaves until you have hit the dirt. They will stop and smell it. I use that tactic often.
Now I don't know how much else it is going to help with rubbing dirt on you or anything like that.

Deer are very curious animals. Ask any dirt contractors about turning over new dirt and deer just walking right out to check it out. New roads and trails cut will make them curious and want to investigate. Not sure if it's the smell, or the activity.

true...seems like they would be tormented...lol...
I think it is the way the earthy scent is stirred up...you know...like the smell you get when you dig a hole in your yard as oppossed to just the hard ground itself...
Or...I could be losing my mind...[&:]

I have built alot of new holmes. Whenever a new basement is dug in most areas i could tell you there will be deer tracts there the very next day. If a access ramp is dug they will even come down into the hole. They definatly like fresh dirt. Ever see a bag of lawn leaves saved till the ground is covered with snow. Break the bag open and scatter around. The Turkeys will be there fast to tear it up.

Maybe deer are attracted to minerals?Anytime you disturb the ground you release the smell of nitrogen and other minerals covered by topsoil, maybe they relate the smell of freshly made scrapes and the deer are scent checking it?Just my theory.
