Deer are everywhere- Big bucks are funny though. They don't get big by being where archers think they should be.
Of the three big guys that I've shot- every one was near GREAT cover! The "deep dark woods" are sometimes not filled with great cover or food. Many of the big oak or pine forests in WI have little cover for these big guys way off the road. So they stick close to the cuttings, yards, fencelines, anywhere that there is Great cover.
Not to say that there are not monsters in the out of the way areas. I have seen some of the bigest bucks while kayaking little creeks in the fall. I know by looking at the map that I'm over 2 miles from any road at that point but whoa there he is drinking on the bank and watched me pass like I was a duck! At 3:00 in the afternoon.
