Rut question
When does the Tomato rut come in and how long does it last in Va? What sign should I look for? Do they tend to lose weight during the rut? A question for you all who live in states that allow baiting, what do you use as bait?

RE: Rut question
In Missouri, we don't tend to bait 'em as much as we do drive them.
Usually, we set our people in stands first and get four or five drivers behind them, about twenty or so feet apart so none slip through the cracks. The best tool we've found to keep 'em moving with is ketchup bottles; you oughta see how those things run ahead to escape their doom!

RE: Rut question
Oh what the heck,
The rut begins as soon as the male stems get hard. This occurs at the same time every year and has nothing to do with temperature or moon phase as many people think.
The rut will last for about 2-3 weeks and ends when the male stem gets soft.
Baiting during the rut is useless as all mature stiff stemmed males abandon food and search for a nice piece of seed.
My best success comes during post rut when dejected and insecure limp stemmed males can easily be provoked with aggressive calling (name calling that is.) Start low and about every 5 minutes say "hey limpy need a splint"
If you get a males attention then it is time to step it up. Try a series of loud "Whats wrong cant get it up noodle stem" followed by " You are such a stud lover boy...NOT"
More than likely he will come in looking for a fight, then you stick him

RE: Rut question
Good info folks. I have another question, how do you score a tomato for P&Y, by the stem?
MQ1 does P&Y feel catsup bottles as fair pursuit?
I still would like to know what can be used as bait?
