im with you tazman the wind is not your friend,i spray down, wash my clothes, take good routes to my stands, the whole nine yards but a nose knows.here in tx the skeeters are so big you need a 2" cutting diameter to get one.that is what gets you,use bug spray or do flip flops in your hidey hole all day swatting mosquitos.

No offense taken Taz - none at all - I definately don't have 40 years of experience. But I did have 2 deer on 2 back to back days both 3 feet from me, eye to eye, and directly down wind. I was afraid to blink - but I ended up taking the first one! The second one did not know I was there til he heard the hammer pull back and click - then ran like hell lol.

I don't buy into the scent lok as much as I do the baking soda.

When I have 40 years of experience (or 10 for that matter) I think I will come to appreciate hunting the wind more because I'll be after more wary game. For now, I'll take my experiences one at a time and use baking soda to the extremes.

Cool, I am not one to step on folks toes. Deer on occasion will do things that make no sense at all, I had a freind years ago that feel asleep on stand, he was woke up by something poking around in his coat pocket.... scared the caca out of him because he was in bear country and he had hard candy in his pocket! When he got the guts to look it was a doe poking in his pocket, he said when he moved she jumped 3 foot in the air! You know she had to of had his wind if she was in his pocket![8D]

I too have been trying the socks and I'm quite impressed. While, I beleive that carbon suits are somewhat effective and no single thing is complete effective by it's self, I believe that the Xscent Clothing is a better product. Scent Loks own literature tells you that each time that you reactivate their clothing it becomes a little less absorbant of odor. Also, the chemicals in other products like "Contain" wash out over time. Xscent is woven directly into the materail. The Camo T-Shirt that I have weighs the same as my other T-Shirts.

Most of you are using Baking Soda and water mixture now, as that is the ingredient in almost all Scent Eliminators. They work for a few hours, but we're talking about absorportion again. Xtreme Scents has devoloped a product that captures and eliminates odor vapors that escape for the surface of bacteria.

Anti-microbial technology has been used and refined to eliminate bacteria in the Medical industry for 30 years. I plan to use these products extensively this year as they just make sense to me.

Hunting the wind is ALWAYS, without a doubt, the best approach when bowhunting for scent control. No one can really deny that fact, but..............when for example, if you are in a situation like me....I don't have a lot of land to hunt or different spots to put stands purely because of different wind directions and I can only get out when 20 different things fall into place. I can't afford to NOT hunt when the wind is bad. I have to deal with it and move on.

Also, how many times have you been on stand and the wind/thermals change?? Probably everytime out. So in essance, saying "Hunt the Wind" doesn't really mean a whole lot. So your telling me if the wind changes to a bad direction....you pack up, get out and go home?? I doubt it.

Tazman,

If I could pick on you or what you said a bit...
I too have had deer that had no idea I was there that were, what I thought was downwind of me, but later after I was leaving I found out that the wind from my stand was not blowing in the direction where they were at.
This for an example. Everyone, including you, me and alot of people say to hunt the wind. But is a guy ever really hunting with a wind advantage for more than a 2-4 hour block of time?????? Heck, even more than a 1-2 hour stretch??? That should be the real question.

Not at all, I try to have several stands if possible to cover wind changes, however I have been on stands where if the wind changed there was no other alternative, did I leave? No, but I don't recall killing but a few deer when this happened and they all came in from the upwind direction.

It is rare that I pack it in with a wind change unless it is a big buck I have been hunting and I don't want to spook him.

I have never bought into the scent-loc clothing. My take is that when brand new it may work a little but not worth the $$$. I agree that you must hunt the wind but I don't know about the areas you all hunt in but here in northeastern Pa. the wind may change 5 or 6 times during a hunt. So I just take my chances. Not to mention that some of my best stands have had buck approach from every direction. I think I may try the baking soda in the sock this year and see how that works. I will continue to shower in scentless soap, use scentless deordorant, spray down with scent spray and wear rubber boots. I realize that if the buck is down wind you will get busted! Not just downwind but if the thermals are wrong and blowing in the bucks face you are screwed!

OK...I'm just going to come right out and say it...Scent lok type clothing is a gimmick!! All you need to know is that in order for carbon to be reactivated, the clothes dryer you put it in would need to get so hot for reactivation that your suit would fry!! So if they come out with disposable scent lok suits, they might work for a very short amount of time(that is if the carbon isn't saturated from all the odors at the store already). I'm not going to bash scent lok clothing and people who choose to use them because like someone else said if it gives you confidence then wear it!!! But at this point in time...it's just really expensive camo IMO!! I would spend that money on buying more stands so it's easier for you to hunt the wind!!
StumpHunter...you better believe that if I'm in stand and the wind changes to an undesirable direction I change locations by either taking stand down and move it to another location, move to another existing stand, or leave altogether!! And no, I don't hunt on a large private tract of land...I hunt 100% public property. It takes 1 time of smelling something out of place for that mature buck to go nocturnal!

Doelover,

So let's say it's 4:45-5:00 with legal shooting ending at 6:00-6:15, you need a south-west, west or northwest wind for this stand to be a good "wind" huntable spot. The wind changes from either of those to a northeast or east wind(bad wind for that spot). So your saying you pack up and leave?? I can't believe you or anyone else would. What if your on your way out, you either knowingly or unknowingly bump into big ben or doe for that matter while your being SOOOOO wind cautious??? If you think one sniff of your scent will put him nocturnal(which is up for debate).....then bumping him on your way out or moving to another stand would then too? Right?? Also, if you have scent that a deer will smell while your in your tree, well then aren't you brushing that same scent all over trees, weeds and the ground while your walking out and he will smell that anyway?? What you said doesn't really make sense to me. Let me know what state land you hunt, so I stay clear of it, because if we were hunting the same tract and I saw you possibly moving around every hour to other stands or walk past me to your truck before absolute last light.....I'd go nuts and be very POed!!
