Default What do yOU thinK?

I am focusing on hunting elk this fall with my bow. I have a 2002 Hoyt Ultratec set at 60 pounds with a 31 in. draw. I shoot a whisker biscuit rest, dead nuts sight, and a release with a string loop. I am shooting Goldtip hunters 5575 right now with thunderhead 100 gr, but I don't like them. Maybe it's from a few bad experiences I've had, and I just would like something else.

What I'm thinking of doing is either going to a cut on contact blade, like a rocky mtn. or magnus fixed blade

or even the new hypershock..but i don't want to be sucked in by false advertising.

I may also change my setup to be a little heavier with easton aluminum arrows.

what do you guys think, for elk?

Right now, I'm leaning towards 5575 XT goldtips with a cut on contact fixed blade.

please be specific..thanks!

Dan

I'm going to be general, sorry, and say Yes. Your setup is fine to take an elk.

Montana ! I've been using Steelforce 100's for 3 season's now .I use them for hunting deer and moose they're cut on contact,Last season I tried Crimson Talon's but found then too fragile and too expensive ,I've heard they made some improvement's with them for the up coming season .I plan on trying the MontecG5's this seaon and If they don't work out then I'll be back to my ole reliable Steelforce 100's. When these broadheads make contact they leave a heck of a blood trail. I'm also using Goldtips but I'm using the 3555's they're pretty light but with the Steelforce I think they'll make great combo.I also have 6 Carbon Express Terminator Hunter's in 6575 but I'm not sure if they might not be too heavy .guy's on this forum tell me that they'll be good for elk and moose but when you start looking at your wieght verses speed I would think that I would have more Kinetic Energy with the 3555's ,I'm not sure I could be wrong .

It all looks good except for the battery terminal cleaner.

No it's not!

Yes it is!!

Yes it is!!!!

So much for the whisker biskit argument.

Look at the Magnus Stinger. That'd be the broadhead I'd pick for your setup.

Are you disappointed with the Thunderhead broadheads? That's pretty unusual since they are a great broadhead. If your wanting to go with a cut on contact head I'd suggest the Magnus Stinger 4 blade.

I will just tell you what I use, you can decide if you like my setup or not? I have used this arrow & broadhead combonation for six years & 4-elk.
Easton XX-78 Super Slam 2219's Topped with 125-grain 3-blade Muzzy Broadheads.

My thinking maybe WAY off? I like heavy arrows & heavy broadheads for elk hunting.
I think you have plenty of KE in your current setup to take any bull.

good luck,

wk

Wolf killer you and I must think alike. I too like heavy arrows for elk. I started shooting a 2219 in 1998, I have killed 4 bulls with this set up. The only thing different is I do shoot a Nap Thunderhead 100gr. They are a very good broadhead, and I have had no problems with them. My set up weighs total of 580 grains, more than enough for elk. The muzzy is also a excellent broadhead, when I use up my supply of broadheads I might buy them, who knows?. There was a going out of business sale in 98, and I bought 8 dozen arrows (XX75 2219) and 6 dozen broadheads ( thunderheads) all for half off. I still have quite a few broadheads that are NIB.

I prefer the Cut no Contact head over the puncture type head on a bull elk. This does not mean that puncture type heads don't work fine with adequate amouts of KE backing them. I have used both and killed with both. I had muzzy 3 blades and now shoot Steelforce and have had great success with them. I feel with the same KE I get better penetration with the 2 blade style cut on contact head. Less friction on impact, slicing vs puncturing. Bulls get thick hided and muddy during the archery season.
