I am a meat hunter through and through. I hae passed on a lot of little bucks, only to sh0oot the big doe that walks in right after a little buck. I do not care one bit about the score of the bucks rack. If a buck comes in that has a pretty rack and at least a 6 point frame with a 12 inch or better spread I will give very serious thought of taking him. I can feed my family a lot longer off a nice 145 doe than I can off that 95 pound spike. I try not to shoot any buck that isn't at least 2-3 years old. I also hunt state land 98% of the season.

January is coming to an end. At this point, I'll be happy with anything.

i am a meat hunter. therefore the first 2 deer that walk into my lane go directly to the freezer do not pass go and do not collect 200...
now saying that this is the 3rd year that i have sussfully killed with a bow. i think next year i will try not to stick a button buck. in fact i was really proud of myself this year and let a yearling walk. although it was starting to get hard. it was in my shooting lane at 20 yards for at least 5 min. broadside. a friend of mine that i was going to give my next deer( because he did not kill this year and dosen't have much money) was ticked off at me and i mean ticked off. but i gave him a 8 point the next morning(opening day of gun)

I guess everyone has said it already, but at this point in my hunting life I will shoot pretty much any buck that I can get a clean shot on. I might pass on Spikes and definitely on button bucks.

As for does, I usually have the decision to shoot one or to let one pass before my butt even hits the stand. Late in the season anything becomes fair game (except the spikes and buttons).

Hunting is very personal to me and my decisions and criteria for shooting deer will vary greatly from more experienced hunters in different geography's.
