Has anyone ever had this problem....
The other day I was shooting in my back yard at my Block target. Well I got to thinking about people saying that they were happy with their shooting as long as they could hit a pie plate. Now mind you I was shooting 3" groups at 30 yards and when I stuck a plate to the target and shot a couple of rounds at it I was shooting all over the place, I mean I could hardly it the damn thing. But then I took it off of the target and went back to shooting the dots on the Block and my groups came right back in. I guess shooting at the plate just killed my concentration. Anybody else ever experience anything like this?

gut:
You can shoot at a deer, or you can concentrate your sight on a particular spot on the deer. Even on a large surface of one color and/or contrast, there is a "spot."
If you use a "peep sight," it can be difficult to find and stay on a small spot on a larger surface of same color and/or contrast.

I hear ya guyshot. I used to shoot at paper plates with average results. Out of 30 arrows from 20-30 yards I would put anywhere from 27 to all of them on the plate. Then I got the block and all I can say is WOW. My groups are unreal when aiming at that little black circle. Granted not all of them touch it, but they're all within a half inch. It amazing how something like that can blow your concentration and expand your groups.

Aim small,miss small.Aim big,miss big.
BUT,you need to learn how to concentrate and keep it in the middle of the plate.A deer usually doesn't have a spot to aim at but there are definately markers on them at times but not always.3-d targets are good to teach us how to aim in an area, although when I shoot 3-d,I usually have binoculars and pick out a spot I am trying to hit.
I really don't know what to say about the peep sight comment,If a peep is used properly(both eyes open),you should be able to superimpose the pin right onto the spot on an animal you want to hit.

I do the same thing.
It's pretty common when your used to spot shooting. I truly hate shooting at FITA targets.
It does show you how important it is to pick a spot on a animal!

I'm kind of the same way. When I shoot at a bare target and just pick out a blemish I can stack arrows all day long. But as soon as I put up one of those bright three spot targets my groups grow signifigantly. I don't figure an animal has a bunch of yellow and orange dots all over it so I usually just pick out a blemish ont he target just like I would an animal.

Buy a pack of little green (or any bright color) stickers. Mine our about the size of a nickle and quarter. I stick three vertically on my black hole target and shoot one arrow at each. This way you minimize fletching damage and don't accidently stack arrows. My best yet is hitting the sticker on two and barely missing the third at 20 yds.
