Let me add this .... the guy that responds with
"I shoot a rattlesnake backed osage - killed the snake in TX, cut the stave in OK, with bamboo arrows he cut on the river banks of the Arkansas river and the heads he knapped from Quachita obsidian ...."
that guy deserves all our respects because folks, thats truly a whole 'nother class of bowhunting that makes my glass/african wood R/D longbow look like a space aged piece of technology and nothing like "real" bowhunting ! !

Silentassassin - I would bet a slice of Ma's apple pie you'd shoot just about every good buck that comes your way regardless if you shot compounds, crossbows or recurves. Why ? Youre a dang good hunter, you know HOW to hunt .... the only thing that would change is the when it comes time to shoot and you'd quickly adjust to a trad bow IMO. Like I said, I'd bet on it
I appreciate the vote of confidence but there are some guys that I hunt with that constantly remind me that not only am I not as good as them but also I am not as good as I would like to be. You know I am all for someone shooting whatever they prefer. I am actually not bad with trad equipment and I can forsee me hunting some with trad equipment in the future. As to whether or not I will be as successful, I seriously doubt it, but I think I would manage. If I came off to harsh I apologize. Sometimes when I read your posts I don't even make it to the smileys before I start typing my response
Stealthy, I hope you kill a monster with your trad equipment this year. You'll probably be hard to live with but it will make for some lively debates

Where would a message board be without a constant influx of offbeat ideas, concepts and opinions ? (whether I believe them or not is irrelevant )
I tell ya, sticking with my longbow is a hard decision ... even today. Why ? Because its so hard for me. Putting that first arrow into what i want to hit every time .... very difficult to do. Not so with a compound - and knowing that always weights on my mind. Heck man, I like shooting deer, I like to kill big bucks ..... I do not like to miss and come home with unfilled tags. I have a better chance with a compound .... we all know this to be true because uh, thats why most all bowhunters use them, right ? So choosing to use a weapons that affords me LESS chance of success is tough !
But that makes the hunt, it really does. I pitty the fool deer thats 15 steps and broadside ... but those at 20-25 yards, a bit quartering, alert, walking etc etc ... those are the ones that with a compound BAM! dead deer, but with a longbow ... marginal at best shots and ones I have learned to not take.

Stealthy,
Aren't you and Zelazny the same guy?? If so I was asking about that place you posted the pics of the huge bucks all in one field and said you had a tag for it.........the debate got a little off topic from there. Are you that guy?? If not, my mistake. [&:]
I did not mean to sound harsh. I guess I didn't get the true spirit behind your post. If indeed you meant no harm then it was my misinterpretation.
I just didn't see the need to toss a barb at non traditional shooters when you could have just said what you think makes you a good shot and hunter without involving others at all.

I chalk up my accuracy from years and years of reading, reading, and reading some more on different types of releases, back tension, mind games, etc. I've never had a coach. I've tried different methods. And after all that, it's come down to two things: practice judging yardage and just aim, and everything else will come together..................

"..high tech equipment does remove the neccessity of practicing and honing archery skills. Not a bad thing overall."

atlasman - That place is a special draw only for residents of Arkansas, a bowhunting only WMA that has hard antler restrictions, few tags and allows for huge bucks to grow. I hunted it only 4 days and saw 2 does and 1 buck in my headlights. Its a tough place to hunt, but the big bucks are for sure there.
The smileys indicate I wasn't too serious with my post there. Read the "who's the best hunter" thread ..... a guy cannot be gauged on his equipment alone, I truly believe that.

Actually, no, no jesting there and I probably qualify as experienced. Crossbows allow for guys who don't like to practice or don't have the time to go out and be 20 yards accurate with little practice. Hey, if they're going to bowhunt, might as well put a bow in their hand they can hit with, right ? Compounds are right there too - they are SO accurate and easy to shoot its unbelievable, it really is. A novice can be 20 yards accurate in 30 minutes with a tuned bow. I've seen guys who've never drawn a compound keep 4-5" groups at 20 yards with only 10 minutes of practice or less. The modern compound bow makes it that easy. Now, thats not a gauranteed kill by any means .... but it aint shooting a recurve either !

You jest, of course. No experienced archer would make such a claim.
