I usually shoot about a half dozen per year. I take take the hinds, backstraps, loins, shoulders and neck. No ribs. I grind most of mine, so it's all good. I do know guys that shoot 15+ a year, and only take the hinds, backstraps and loins. I understand where these guys are coming from, though I don't do that myself. If I don't want the shoulders or any other part...I'll give them away, but not throw them away. I leave meat that is shot up (gun)...I'm not gonna waste alot of time trying to sort out every little tiny piece of good from bad. If it's shot up, I don't fool with it.

15+ deer a Year? Feeding good deer meat to dogs? Wasting half the deer? And we wonder why the antis make headway against hunting. If I was a anti hunter I would base my ad campaign on this thread.
I can see it clearly Huge billboard. Redneck looking dude with a big gun saying "YEP killed ME 23 Deer to feed my dawgs with"
I am a redneck looking dude, southern and proud... but damn if you feel the need to shoot that many deer for heavens sake donate them (VA has a donation program). Such a better picture "Yep harvested 23 deer, fed em to needy folks all over"
Remember people all hunters are in this together and we all HAVE to put a good face on hunting or we will lose it.

mouse is right. too many deer in northern va. you can take 2 deer per day from third saturday in sept to march 30. you can figure out how many days that is. A LOT. anyways, when we process deer- we grill the shoulders and feed them to his dogs. if anybody that we know or hunt with wanted these shoulders, than we would gladly give them away. when your giving away hq's or shoulders-which would you take? his dogs eat well. i have one place where the landowner is never satisied w/ the # of deer taken. he wants every one gone. it also happens to be in the BEST county in va as far as #'s go. so killncp, if you were in my hunting boots, you would prob do the same.

if im riding thru northern va w/ a deer on my cargo hauler, do you think people(non hunters) really care if the dogs gets the shoulders? they either 1) want them dead 2) want me dead for killing bambi or 3) understand that there is a need for huniting. i dont see why it bothers you that the dogs are being feed the shoulders.
