Grunt Calls vs Deer Grunts

Grunt Calls vs Deer Grunts
Is it just me or do most if not all grunt calls do a poor impersonation of a deer? I have heard bucks grunt on many occasions and to be honest, I have never heard a call that really does a good job duplicating the sound. I learned how to grunt just using my mouth/throat and I feel " my" call is a better duplication of the true thing than the commercial calls I have heard/used. I know everyone has their favorite call, but do you think the calls do a realistic job duplicating an actual buck grunt?
Quick grunt story...
Two weeks ago I was in Nebraska. On the way out driving on the dirt road, I had a deer jump across the road a couple hundred yards up the way. When I got up there, I discovered two doe and an honest 20 inch 8 point. Really nice buck. He was grunting to the does who basically didn' t want anything to do with him. The deer were not nervous about me being in the car and all which was pretty odd I thought. Anyway, I let out a grunt, and the buck grunts back. I grunt again and the buck spins around in my direction and takes 3 or 4 quick steps toward me with his head down and hair raised up on his back. I really didn' t want his girlfriends. I was just glad I was in the car...

That' s pretty cool. I' ve heard many a deer grunt and I would have to agree, most if not all calls out there come close, but not exact - they are plastic sounding. Good thing is though, all deer have different tones to their calls just like all humans sound different. I' ve always kept this in my head as I' m grunting out there. The grunt calls I use don' t scare the deer at all. I' ve grunted at does and bucks and most of the time they just look my way, then go about their business.

I' ve had calls that sounded plastic and I don' t use them. Some of them don' t sound plastic, but I think it' s impossible to make one actually get that urrp a buck gives off.
I think the True Talker has a great tone, but you can' t make any call get the urrp. A grunt tube will give you more of a upp, upp, rather than the urrp, errrp urrp. I know, it' s hard to explain in print but I think anyone that' s heard a deer grunt knows what I' m saying.
Then again, at the right time of year, I don' t know just how realistic you have to be if a deer is in the right mood. I also wonder what a grunt tube sounds like at 50 or 80 yards. Maybe some of the fake sound we hear close up fades away as you get farther out.

RE: Grunt Calls vs Deer Grunts
Thanks guys. At least I got a couple people to respond and I thank you. I too have wondered how realistic the grunt needs to be. As you guys said, lots of calls seem to have a plastic sound if there is such a thing. At least I' m not the only one who thinks that grunt calls in general don' t represent the realistic grunt sound a buck makes. When I heard my first actual deer grunt many years ago, the first thing that hit my mind was...My call doesn' t sound anything like that! So I decided there and then to learn to mimic a deer grunt. I wish I would get some more takers on this thread to see what others think. Thanks again for the response guys. I haven' t posted much lately because it seems that in the past I got little response to most of my posts. Guys busy hunting I guess? Jim

I also learned how to grunt just using my mouth/throat and I feel " my" call is a better duplication of the true thing than the commercial calls. but I can' t seem to do it when I' m in my stand. It' s like I have to warm up first or I can' t get the sound right. I went to Penn State Deer research place where there are deer to try it on and It was neet the way they would respond to my call some would follow me from one end to the other.

That' s cool pinesap and I' m with you on the " my" call thing. I don' t have trouble in the stand. My throat does need to be clear though. Doesn' t work to good while fighting off a cold. I live in PA also, but have never been to the Penn State deer pen. I' ll have to check it out someday.
