your take on " paying" to get your trophy buck!
call me crazy but i argued w/ a friend, he shot a huge illinois buck last year, paid for the hunt during the rut, actually choked and got lucky, hit the leg and the arrow split and went up into a lung, ran a mile and a half and the coyotes dragged him down and killed him and ate the hind quarters, besides that he' s never taken a great buck here in ny w/ the bow, and i talked to him the other day and now he' s this " I ONLY SHOOT POPE AND YOUNG BUCKS" ! JERK!!!!! he shot a 9 pter 2 years ago here, hit it in the neck, another choke,,, and said i was leading it!! has a big 8 on his wall w/ the rifle and i was told someone else shot it first and he tracked it in the snow and killed it so i quess he' s a cheating bastard, now hw pays to go! he wants me to go and i always say i have 150' s running aroung here why would i pay to go there??? plus when i have my wallhanger i will have earned it, ive been hunting this bow only zone for 6 years and shot one 5 pointer 1-1/2 yr old, have seen an nice 8 but no shot, walking,,,, and some monsters but never in the stand and close enough but studying and hard work will pay off! im sure its nice to go where you grunt and 8 bucks w/ 10pts run right up to you like these tv shows on farms in texas but when i get my all natural homegrown on my land slammer i will be proud, alot more then a cocky poacher who puts corn piles in his yard and shoots turkeys and deer out of his truck!!!!! and chokes when in the stand!

I work with a guy that is strikingly similar. He' s been bragging lately about how he' s been hunting archery here in PA w/out a license this year. I wish I could actually prove he' s doing it. He is also known to tell alot of fish stories.

LOL, I' m starting to wonder if we' re talking about the same person.
The guy I work with cannot be out done. He always has a story with the biggest buck, biggest fish, fastest car, etc. I' ve heard stories of him shooting a doe in the head at 10 yards (with a bow), killing bucks just for the rack and leaving the meat, shooting deer at night with a spotlight, hunting over a feeder from his back porch, etc. All types of illegal and unethical stories.
As I said above though it' s hard to say if he' s telling the truth or full of crap. I' m hoping he' s full of crap.

In my oppinion there is nothing wrong with paying for a hunt. But there is a difference between buying things and earning things. If I paid for a hunt and took a MONSTER BUCK... yes, I would get it mounted... but I wouldn' t brag about it any more than those that I earned - of which some might not even make it to the wall. If I were in your shoes - I would get away from Mr. Pope and Young.

So you don' t really like the guy. You think he' s full of bull hockey. You don' t want to hunt the way he does. So why bother getting in a pissing contest with him? You may be wrong about his PAY TO HUNT... hunts. There is a lot to be said for going to some of these exotic far off states that have hoards of Macho Bucks.... and I' m talking bucks with the bodies you' ve never seen in NY. I' ve hunted NY for 50 years.... I know whats there. I' ve seen some midwest deer... they don' t have ' em in NY. True, the guy may be a jerk, a choker, liar, etc etc... but he' s having fun HIS WAY. Me, I wouldn' t pay thousands of dollars to shoot a Macho BOOK Deer, but I' d be willing to pay for lodging, trespass fees and out of state licenses to have the opportunity to see a few of those buggers. It' s an adventure of it' s own. If you' d rather spend the money on the wife at Xmas, that' s good... but don' t be so quick to criticize a venturous wannabee. Me, I get my kicks just being in the woods. I' ll be up to NY the 13-16th for some bowhunting on heavily hunted public land. I have access to several thousand private acres but this trip is for fun with friends in public never never land. Go figure. I' m packing up and leaving to come home the opening AM of the Southern Tier gun season.
