your take on " paying" to get your trophy buck!

RE: your take on " paying" to get your trophy buck!
I have payed for hunts. Yes, I did take a pretty nice 150 animal in Canada four years ago. Freezing temps and hunting my butt off all week, yeah, I feel I earned that deer despite paying for it. I enjoyed every minute of that hunt, just as much as I do here in PA. Its mounted along side four PA bucks I have taken. I show all of them off equally. No, I didn' t make a marginal shot on that Canadian buck and I took him fairly. There are too many slobs out there who don' t though. Hunting over bait, not tagging what you shoot, and just overall being an A-hole about the sport is where our problem ultimatly lies. I wouldn' t want to associate with a guy like that, in fact, peaple like that I detest.
But as far as going on paid hunting trips, I love to. A chance to hunt different country, see breath-taking scenery and relax. Why not?
In fact, I can' t wait to go to Wyoming next fall on a Mule Deer hunt with the gun. Awesome place to be.

If I had the money I wouldn' t mind going on a paid hunt, but the only way I would do it would be if it was really fair chase, no fence & no feeders or guides. I won' t knock someone who goes with a guide, but anything I kill I want to be able to honestly say, I did all the work and I got the deer with no help.

I don' t think there is anything wrong with paying to hunt. Not everyone has big bucks crawling around on their land. Not everyone has LAND!!!!!! I' ve hunted in S. Illinois. I paid an outfitter to hunt on his land. They were free-roaming deer. No high fences. Hell, he did' nt even have food plots. Just big deer. I had a great time. Never did get my deer, but I saw the biggest deer I' ve ever seen. I don' t think you pay for the deer. You' re paying an outfitter for his time that he spent scouting all his lands, hanging his stands, etc etc. Basically doing the dirty work so you can go out and hopefully bag a monster.
I don' t agree with high fence hunting. What is a " guarenteed hunt" . Thats not hutning. I have a mag (D&DH) wher I read an article on high fence hunting. They actually showed a pic of a hunter who was probably 15 feet from a Very good size buck. Right in the open aong a fence line. The buck just stared at him while the guy was at full draw. Thats not hunting. If someone wants to put a B&C class deer on the wall and tell a grand ol' story....fine, think your a hunter!!!!

but if you are paying to hunt on land that has good bucks, that is fine, if the deer are basically tame and under high fences with low acreage that is BS

Taz,
I did' nt say anything about not working during a hunt. Please tell me......how can you scout all during the spring and summer if you live a couple hundred miles away. I' ve paid to hunt...I loved it. Did I work at it.....you bet. I' ve sat in trees for 13 hours at a time. I relocated stands as I saw need to. Don' t start reading things I did' nt write!!!!!

Field & Stream had an article a few months back that said only 20 percent of all deer hunters would ever shoot a " book" buck in their entire lives. That means 80 percent of us will never harvest a huge buck.
I have roughly 20 acres of timber to hunt. (That is surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of acres of timber) Last weekend I had two other bowhunters trespassing on my land.[>:] After kicking them off in the morning I thought I' d get a decent afternoon hunt. Until....four ATVs went racing around my land.[:@][:@] Called the Sheriff' s office. A female deputy responded. After listening to my tales she asked me what I expected her to do? PULL YOUR GUN AND BLOW MY BRAINS OUT AND PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY.[X(]
Would I pay to hunt on a huge acreage that manages it' s deer population for the chance at a trophy buck? In a word....DUH! I live close to a major metro area wear the bucks are harvested young and not given much of a chance to mature.
Make no mistake, I won' t spend thousands of dollars to hunt a small high fenced area. I' m seriously considering using an outfitter that leases several thousands of acres and is reasonably priced though, if I can find such a thing.
