Shot a heavy deer yesterday...
He weighed 260lbs. on the hoof and when the taxidermist caped the buck he was surprised at the lack of fat on the deer.[] I will get him aged when I get the jaw back from the taxidermist but I am guessing 4 or 5. He should score very close to 140 as an 8 pointer. I found his scrapeline last weekend and setup my stand. Hunted is for the first time last night and rattled him in about 4:15. I saw him coming for about 100 yds and knew he was an old boy as soon as I got a good look at him. He had a very gray face and lots of little stickers. The rack wasn' t real wide but the closer he got the more I could tell he was a shooter. He came in looking for a fight and was quartering to me too much for a shot with mechanical broadheads. I drew when he turned to scratch himself but he immediately turned back and now I was stuck at full draw. He was just over 30 yds out and I wasn' t comfortable with the angle. Finally, he turned enough for a good shot and I watched the fletching disappear into him. He ran the typical 100 yds and I saw all but the last 20 yds. I didn' t see him go down but definitely heard him crash. The blood trail was very clear and went through two of his scrapes. The drag was a killer because I don' t like to dress them close to the stand and it was mostly up hill. My back and legs are not very happy with me today.
It is such a rush when a plan actually comes together. It was just like the shows on the outdoor channel except without the commercials.
